"Whitefoot Sees Queer Things"
《怀特福特看到奇怪的事情》
Whitefoot had spent the winter undisturbed in Farmer Brown’s sugar-house.
“白脚在布朗农夫的糖屋里度过了一个平静的冬天。”
He had almost forgotten the meaning of fear.
“他几乎忘记了恐惧的含义。”
He had come to look on that sugar-house as belonging to him.
“他开始把那个糖屋看作是属于他的。”
It wasn’t until Farmer Brown’s boy came over to prepare things for sugaring that Whitefoot got a single real fright.
“直到布朗农夫的男孩过来为制糖准备东西，白脚才真正受到了一次惊吓。”
The instant Farmer Brown’s boy opened the door, Whitefoot scampered down under the pile of wood to his snug little nest, and there he lay, listening to the strange sounds.
“布朗农夫的男孩一打开门，白脚就窜到木堆下他舒适的小窝里，躺在那里，听着奇怪的声音。”
At last he could stand it no longer and crept to a place where he could peep out and see what was going on.
最后，他再也受不了了，悄悄地爬到一个可以偷看的地方，看看发生了什么事。
It didn’t take him long to discover that this great two-legged creature was not looking for him, and right away he felt better.
他很快就发现这个两条腿的大家伙不是在找他，他马上就感觉好多了。
After a while Farmer Brown’s boy went away, and Whitefoot had the little sugar-house to himself again.
过了一会儿，布朗农夫的儿子走了，白脚又独自拥有了那个小糖屋。
But Farmer Brown’s boy had carelessly left the door wide open. Whitefoot didn’t like that open door. It made him nervous. There was nothing to prevent those who hunt him from walking right in. So the rest of that night Whitefoot felt uncomfortable and anxious.
但是布朗农夫的儿子粗心地把门敞开着。白脚不喜欢那扇敞开的门。这让他很紧张。没有什么能阻止那些追捕他的人直接走进去。所以那天晚上剩下的时间里，白脚感到不舒服和焦虑。
He felt still more anxious when next day Farmer Brown’s boy returned and became very busy putting things to right.
第二天，当布朗农夫的儿子回来并开始忙碌地整理东西时，他感到更加焦虑。
Then Farmer Brown himself came and strange things began to happen.
然后布朗农夫自己来了，奇怪的事情开始发生了。
It became as warm as in summer.
变得像夏天一样温暖。
You see Farmer Brown had built a fire under the evaporator.
你看，农夫布朗在蒸发器下生了火。
Whitefoot’s curiosity kept him at a place where he could peep out and watch all that was done.
白脚的好奇心使他留在一个可以偷看并观察所做一切的地方。
He saw Farmer Brown and Farmer Brown’s boy pour pails of sap into a great pan.
他看到农夫布朗和农夫布朗的孩子把一桶桶的树液倒进一个大锅里。
By and by a delicious odor filled the sugar-house.
渐渐地，糖屋里弥漫着一股美味的气味。
It didn’t take him a great while to discover that these two-legged creatures were so busy that he had nothing to fear from them, and so he crept out to watch.
他没花很长时间就发现这些两条腿的生物很忙，他没什么好怕他们的，于是他爬出来观察。
He saw them draw the golden syrup from one end of the evaporator and fill shining tin cans with it.
他看见他们从蒸发器的一端抽出金色的糖浆，然后把它装进闪亮的锡罐里。
Day after day they did the same thing.
他们日复一日地做着同样的事情。
At night when they had left and all was quiet inside the sugar-house, Whitefoot stole out and found delicious crumbs where they had eaten their lunch.
晚上，当他们离开，糖屋里一切都安静下来时，Whitefoot 偷偷溜出来，在他们吃午饭的地方找到了美味的面包屑。
He tasted that thick golden stuff and found it sweet and good.
他尝了尝那浓稠的金色物质，发现它又甜又好吃。
Later he watched them make sugar and nearly made himself sick that night when they had gone home, for they had left some of that sugar where he could get at it.
后来，他看着他们制糖，那天晚上，当他们回家时，他差点把自己弄病了，因为他们把一些糖留在了他能拿到的地方。
He didn’t understand these queer doings at all.
他根本不明白这些奇怪的举动。
But he was no longer afraid.
但他不再害怕了。
