Thenwewentloafingaroundtown.Thestoresandhouseswasmostallold,shackly,driedupframeconcernsthathadn’teverbeenpainted;theywassetupthreeorfourfootabovegroundonstilts,soastobeoutofreachofthewaterwhentheriverwasoverflowed.
Thehouseshadlittlegardensaroundthem,buttheydidn’tseemtoraisehardlyanythinginthembutjimpson-weeds,andsunflowers,andashpiles,andoldcurled-upbootsandshoes,andpiecesofbottles,andrags,andplayed-outtinware.
Thefenceswasmadeofdifferentkindsofboards,nailedonatdifferenttimes;andtheyleanedeverywhichway,andhadgatesthatdidn’tgenerlyhavebutonehingealeatherone.

Hewasstandingperfectlystillinthestreet,andhadapistolraisedinhisrighthandnotaimingit,butholdingitoutwiththebarreltilteduptowardsthesky.
ThesamesecondIseeayounggirlcomingontherun,andtwomenwithher.
Boggsandthementurnedroundtoseewhocalledhim,andwhentheyseethepistolthemenjumpedtooneside,andthepistol-barrelcomedownslowandsteadytoalevelbothbarrelscocked.
Boggsthrowsupbothofhishandsandsays,OLord,don’tshoot!Bang!
goesthefirstshot,andhestaggersback,clawingattheairbang!
