TheshoresoftheStraitsofSundaareunsuppliedwiththosedomineeringfortresseswhichguardtheentrancestotheMediterranean,theBaltic,andthePropontis.
UnliketheDanes,theseOrientalsdonotdemandtheobsequioushomageofloweredtop-sailsfromtheendlessprocessionofshipsbeforethewind,whichforcenturiespast,bynightandbyday,havepassedbetweentheislandsofSumatraandJava,freightedwiththecostliestcargoesoftheeast.
Butwhiletheyfreelywaiveaceremoniallikethis,theydobynomeansrenouncetheirclaimtomoresolidtribute.
