WhenBrahma,ortheGodofGods,saiththeShaster,resolvedtorecreatetheworldafteroneofitsperiodicaldissolutions,hegavebirthtoVishnoo,topresideoverthework;buttheVedas,ormysticalbooks,whoseperusalwouldseemtohavebeenindispensabletoVishnoobeforebeginningthecreation,andwhichthereforemusthavecontainedsomethingintheshapeofpracticalhintstoyoungarchitects,theseVedaswerelyingatthebottomofthewaters;soVishnoobecameincarnateinawhale,andsoundingdowninhimtotheuttermostdepths,rescuedthesacredvolumes.
WasnotthisVishnooawhaleman,then?
evenasamanwhoridesahorseiscalledahorseman?
