BymyretentivememoryofthehieroglyphicsupononeSpermWhaleinparticular,IwasmuchstruckwithaplaterepresentingtheoldIndiancharacterschiselledonthefamoushieroglyphicpalisadesonthebanksoftheUpperMississippi. IshouldsaythatthoseNewEnglandrocksontheseacoast,whichAgassizimaginestobearthemarksofviolentscrapingcontactwithvastfloatingicebergs-Ishouldsay,thatthoserocksmustnotalittleresembletheSpermWhaleinthisparticular. Italsoseemstomethatsuchscratchesinthewhaleareprobablymadebyhostilecontactwithotherwhales;forIhavemostremarkedtheminthelarge,full-grownbullsofthespecies. Awordortwomoreconcerningthismatteroftheskinorblubberofthewhale. Ithasalreadybeensaid,thatitisstriptfromhiminlongpieces,calledblanket-pieces. Likemostsea-terms,thisoneisveryhappyandsignificant. Forthewhaleisindeedwraptupinhisblubberasinarealblanketorcounterpane;or,stillbetter,anIndianponchosliptoverhishead,andskirtinghisextremity. True,otherfisharefoundexceedinglybriskinthoseHyperboreanwaters;butthese,beitobserved,areyourcold-blooded,lunglessfish,whoseverybelliesarerefrigerators;creatures,thatwarmthemselvesundertheleeofaniceberg,asatravellerinwinterwouldbaskbeforeaninnfire;whereas,likeman,thewhalehaslungsandwarmblood.Freezehisblood,andhedies.
