Butthesetwoharpoons,eachbyitsowncord,arebothconnectedwiththeline;theobjectbeingthis:todartthemboth,ifpossible,oneinstantlyaftertheotherintothesamewhale;sothatif,inthecomingdrag,oneshoulddrawout,theothermaystillretainahold.Itisadoublingofthechances. Butitveryoftenhappensthatowingtotheinstantaneous,violent,convulsiverunningofthewhaleuponreceivingthefirstiron,itbecomesimpossiblefortheharpooneer,howeverlightning-likeinhismovements,topitchthesecondironintohim. Nevertheless,asthesecondironisalreadyconnectedwiththeline,andthelineisrunning,hencethatweaponmust,atallevents,beanticipatinglytossedoutoftheboat,somehowandsomewhere;elsethemostterriblejeopardywouldinvolveallhands.
