Again:astheprofoundcalmwhichonlyapparentlyprecedesandprophesiesofthestorm,isperhapsmoreawfulthanthestormitself;for,indeed,thecalmisbutthewrapperandenvelopeofthestorm;andcontainsitinitself,astheseeminglyharmlessrifleholdsthefatalpowder,andtheball,andtheexplosion;sothegracefulreposeoftheline,asitsilentlyserpentinesabouttheoarsmenbeforebeingbroughtintoactualplay-thisisathingwhichcarriesmoreoftrueterrorthananyotheraspectofthisdangerousaffair.

Andifyoubeaphilosopher,thoughseatedinthewhale-boat,youwouldnotatheartfeelonewhitmoreofterror,thanthoughseatedbeforeyoureveningfirewithapoker,andnotaharpoon,byyourside.
