Andbraveashemightbe,itwasthatsortofbraverychiefly,visibleinsomeintrepidmen,which,whilegenerallyabidingfirmintheconflictwithseas,orwinds,orwhales,oranyoftheordinaryirrationalhorrorsoftheworld,yetcannotwithstandthosemoreterrific,becausemorespiritualterrors,whichsometimesmenaceyoufromtheconcentratingbrowofanenragedandmightyman. Butwerethecomingnarrativetorevealinanyinstance,thecompleteabasementofpoorStarbuck’sfortitude,scarcemightIhavethehearttowriteit;butitisathingmostsorrowful,nayshocking,toexposethefallofvalorinthesoul. Menmayseemdetestableasjointstock-companiesandnations;knaves,fools,andmurdererstheremaybe;menmayhavemeanandmeagrefaces;but,man,intheideal,issonobleandsosparkling,suchagrandandglowingcreature,thatoveranyignominiousblemishinhimallhisfellowsshouldruntothrowtheircostliestrobes. Thatimmaculatemanlinesswefeelwithinourselves,sofarwithinus,thatitremainsintactthoughalltheoutercharacterseemgone;bleedswithkeenestanguishattheundrapedspectacleofavalor-ruinedman. Norcanpietyitself,atsuchashamefulsight,completelystifleherupbraidingsagainstthepermittingstars. ButthisaugustdignityItreatof,isnotthedignityofkingsandrobes,butthataboundingdignitywhichhasnorobedinvestiture.
