Forbesidesthegreatlengthofthewhalingvoyage,thenumerousarticlespeculiartotheprosecutionofthefishery,andtheimpossibilityofreplacingthemattheremoteharborsusuallyfrequented,itmustberemembered,thatofallships,whalingvesselsarethemostexposedtoaccidentsofallkinds,andespeciallytothedestructionandlossoftheverythingsuponwhichthesuccessofthevoyagemostdepends. Hence,thespareboats,sparespars,andsparelinesandharpoons,andspareeverythings,almost,butaspareCaptainandduplicateship. AttheperiodofourarrivalattheIsland,theheavieststorageofthePequodhadbeenalmostcompleted;comprisingherbeef,bread,water,fuel,andironhoopsandstaves. But,asbeforehinted,forsometimetherewasacontinualfetchingandcarryingonboardofdiversoddsandendsofthings,bothlargeandsmall. ChiefamongthosewhodidthisfetchingandcarryingwasCaptainBildad’ssister,aleanoldladyofamostdeterminedandindefatigablespirit,butwithalverykindhearted,whoseemedresolvedthat,ifshecouldhelpit,nothingshouldbefoundwantinginthePequod,afteroncefairlygettingtosea.
