Thepersonswho,likeourselves,nevercrossthePlacedeGrévewithoutcastingaglanceofpityandsympathyonthatpoorturretstrangledbetweentwohovelsofthetimeofLouisXV.,caneasilyreconstructintheirmindstheaggregateofedificestowhichitbelonged,andfindagainentireinittheancientGothicplaceofthefifteenthcentury. Itwasthen,asitisto–day,anirregulartrapezoid,borderedononesidebythequay,andontheotherthreebyaseriesoflofty,narrow,andgloomyhouses. Byday,onecouldadmirethevarietyofitsedifices,allsculpturedinstoneorwood,andalreadypresentingcompletespecimensofthedifferentdomesticarchitecturesoftheMiddleAges,runningbackfromthefifteenthtotheeleventhcentury,fromthecasementwhichhadbeguntodethronethearch,totheRomansemicircle,whichhadbeensupplantedbytheogive,andwhichstilloccupies,belowit,thefirststoryofthatancienthousedelaTourRoland,atthecornerofthePlaceupontheSeine,onthesideofthestreetwiththeTannerie. Atnight,onecoulddistinguishnothingofallthatmassofbuildings,excepttheblackindentationoftheroofs,unrollingtheirchainofacuteanglesroundtheplace;foroneoftheradicaldifferencesbetweenthecitiesofthattime,andthecitiesofthepresentday,layinthefaadeswhichlookedupontheplacesandstreets,andwhichwerethengables. Forthelasttwocenturiesthehouseshavebeenturnedround. InthecentreoftheeasternsideofthePlace,roseaheavyandhybridconstruction,formedofthreebuildingsplacedinjuxtaposition.
