Aswithyou,soalsowithus,therearefourpointsofthecompassNorth,South,East,andWest.
Therebeingnosunnorotherheavenlybodies,itisimpossibleforustodeterminetheNorthintheusualway;butwehaveamethodofourown.

Altogether,wehavenotsomuchdifficultyasmightbeexpectedindeterminingourbearings.
Yetinourmoretemperateregions,inwhichthesouthwardattractionishardlyfelt,walkingsometimesinaperfectlydesolateplainwheretherehavebeennohousesnortreestoguideme,Ihavebeenoccasionallycompelledtoremainstationaryforhourstogether,waitingtilltheraincamebeforecontinuingmyjourney.
