Meanwhile,aseveryoneshecaredtoseecametoHER(andshecouldfillherroomsaseasilyastheBeauforts,andwithoutaddingasingleitemtothemenuofhersuppers),shedidnotsufferfromhergeographicisolation. Theimmenseaccretionoffleshwhichhaddescendedonherinmiddlelifelikeafloodoflavaonadoomedcityhadchangedherfromaplumpactivelittlewomanwithaneatly–turnedfootandankleintosomethingasvastandaugustasanaturalphenomenon. ItamusedNewlandArcher(whohadsecretlysituatedthelove–scenesof"MonsieurdeCamors"inMrs.Mingott'sbedroom)topictureherblamelesslifeledinthestage–settingofadultery;buthesaidtohimself,withconsiderableadmiration,thatifaloverhadbeenwhatshewanted,theintrepidwomanwouldhavehadhimtoo. TothegeneralrelieftheCountessOlenskawasnotpresentinhergrandmother'sdrawing–roomduringthevisitofthebetrothedcouple. Mrs.Mingottsaidshehadgoneout;which,onadayofsuchglaringsunlight,andatthe"shoppinghour,"seemedinitselfanindelicatethingforacompromisedwomantodo. Butatanyrateitsparedthemtheembarrassmentofherpresence,andthefaintshadowthatherunhappypastmightseemtoshedontheirradiantfuture. Thevisitwentoffsuccessfully,aswastohavebeenexpected.
