OfcourseWhitefootheardthemgoout,andrightawayhepokedhislittleheadoutfromunderthepileofwoodtoseeifthewaywasclear. FarmerBrown’sboysatthererightinplainsight,butWhitefootdidn’tseehim. ThenhehappenedtolookuprightintotheeyesofFarmerBrown’sboy. WithafrightenedlittlesqueakWhitefootdartedback,andforalongtimehewasafraidtocomeoutagain. ButFarmerBrown’sboydidn’tmove,andatlastWhitefootcouldstandthetemptationnolonger. Hedartedouthalfway,scurriedback,cameoutagain,andatlastventuredrightuptothecrust. Thenhebegantodragitbacktothewoodpile.StillFarmerBrown’sboydidnotmove. Fortwoorthreedaysthesamethinghappened. Bythistime,Whitefoothadlostallfear. HeknewthatFarmerBrown’sboywouldnotharmhim,anditwasnotlongbeforeheventuredtotakeabitoffoodfromFarmerBrown’sboy’shand. AfterthatFarmerBrown’sboytookcarethatnocrumbsshouldbescatteredontheground. Whitefoothadtocometohimforhisfood,andalwaysFarmerBrown’sboyhadsomethingdeliciousforhim.
