Ihavehadtwenty–fiveorthirtysouls,withtheirbodies,atonceundermyroof,andyetweoftenpartedwithoutbeingawarethatwehadcomeveryneartooneanother. IamsurprisedwhentheheraldblowshissummonsbeforesomeTremontorAstororMiddlesexHouse,toseecomecreepingoutoverthepiazzaforallinhabitantsaridiculousmouse,whichsoonagainslinksintosomeholeinthepavement. OneinconvenienceIsometimesexperiencedinsosmallahouse,thedifficultyofgettingtoasufficientdistancefrommyguestwhenwebegantoutterthebigthoughtsinbigwords. Youwantroomforyourthoughtstogetintosailingtrimandrunacourseortwobeforetheymaketheirport. Thebulletofyourthoughtmusthaveovercomeitslateralandricochetmotionandfallenintoitslastandsteadycoursebeforeitreachestheearofthehearer,elseitmayplowoutagainthroughthesideofhishead. Also,oursentenceswantedroomtounfoldandformtheircolumnsintheinterval. Individuals,likenations,musthavesuitablebroadandnaturalboundaries,evenaconsiderableneutralground,betweenthem. Ihavefounditasingularluxurytotalkacrossthepondtoacompanionontheoppositeside. Inmyhouseweweresonearthatwecouldnotbegintohear—wecouldnotspeaklowenoughtobeheard;aswhenyouthrowtwostonesintocalmwatersonearthattheybreakeachother'sundulations. Ifwearemerelyloquaciousandloudtalkers,thenwecanaffordtostandveryneartogether,cheekbyjowl,andfeeleachother'sbreath;butifwespeakreservedlyandthoughtfully,wewanttobefartherapart,thatallanimalheatandmoisturemayhaveachancetoevaporate. And,trueenough,inproportionasheappearedtohumblehimselfwasheexalted. Ididnotknowatfirstbutitwastheresultofawisepolicy. Itseemedthatfromsuchabasisoftruthandfranknessasthepoorweak–headedpauperhadlaid,ourintercoursemightgoforwardtosomethingbetterthantheintercourseofsages.
