EventhecollegebredandsocalledliberallyeducatedmenhereandelsewherehavereallylittleornoacquaintancewiththeEnglishclassics;andasfortherecordedwisdomofmankind,theancientclassicsandBibles,whichareaccessibletoallwhowillknowofthem,therearethefeeblesteffortsanywheremadetobecomeacquaintedwiththem.
Iknowawoodchopper,ofmiddleage,whotakesaFrenchpaper,notfornewsashesays,forheisabovethat,butto"keephimselfinpractice,"hebeingaCanadianbybirth;andwhenIaskhimwhatheconsidersthebestthinghecandointhisworld,hesays,besidethis,tokeepupandaddtohisEnglish.

Indeed,thereishardlytheprofessorinourcolleges,who,ifhehasmasteredthedifficultiesofthelanguage,hasproportionallymasteredthedifficultiesofthewitandpoetryofaGreekpoet,andhasanysympathytoimparttothealertandheroicreader;andasforthesacredScriptures,orBiblesofmankind,whointhistowncantellmeeventheirtitles?
MostmendonotknowthatanynationbuttheHebrewshavehadascripture.
