ForthoughtheoldBaronetsurvivedmanymonths,heneverrecoveredtheuseofhisintellectorhisspeechcompletely,andthegovernmentoftheestatedevolveduponhiselderson.InastrangeconditionPittfoundit. SirPittwasalwaysbuyingandmortgaging;hehadtwentymenofbusiness,andquarrelswitheach;quarrelswithallhistenants,andlawsuitswiththem;lawsuitswiththelawyers;lawsuitswiththeMiningandDockCompaniesinwhichhewasproprietor;andwitheverypersonwithwhomhehadbusiness. TounravelthesedifficultiesandtosettheestateclearwasataskworthyoftheorderlyandperseveringdiplomatistofPumpernickel,andhesethimselftoworkwithprodigiousassiduity. SirPitthadconcludednobargainforthesaleofthelivingofQueen’sCrawley;whenitshoulddrop,herLadyshipproposedtotakethepatronageintoherownhandsandpresentayoungprotegetotheRectory,onwhichsubjectthediplomaticPittsaidnothing. Mrs.Bute’sintentionswithregardtoMissBetsyHorrockswerenotcarriedintoeffect,andshepaidnovisittoSouthamptonGaol. SheandherfatherlefttheHallwhenthelattertookpossessionoftheCrawleyArmsinthevillage,ofwhichhehadgotaleasefromSirPitt. Theex-butlerhadobtainedasmallfreeholdtherelikewise,whichgavehimavotefortheborough. HebelievedtheBinkiefamilytobethegreatestandwisestandmostinterestingintheworld,andherLadyshipandhisaunthadlongheldascendencyoverhim;butsometimeshefeltthatshecommandedhimtoomuch. LadyJanealwayswalkedbytheoldman,andwasanevidentfavouritewithhim. Heusedtonodmanytimestoherandsmilewhenshecamein,andutterinarticulatedeprecatorymoanswhenshewasgoingaway. Betweenthemthetwofamiliesgotagreatportionofherprivatesavingsoutofher,andfinallyshefledtoLondonfollowedbytheanathemasofboth,anddeterminedtoseekforservitudeagainasinfinitelylessonerousthanliberty.
