CaptainDobbindidnotcorrectthiserroroftheworthylady,butlistenedtoallherstoryofcomplaintsandmisfortuneswithgreatsympathy—condoledwithherlossesandprivations,andagreedinreprehendingthecruelconductofMr.Osbornetowardshisfirstbenefactor. Whenshehadeasedheroverflowingbosomsomewhat,andpouredforthmanyofhersorrows,hehadthecouragetoaskactuallytoseeAmelia,whowasaboveinherroomasusual,andwhomhermotherledtremblingdownstairs. Herappearancewassoghastly,andherlookofdespairsopathetic,thathonestWilliamDobbinwasfrightenedashebeheldit;andreadthemostfatalforebodingsinthatpalefixedface.
