Nonaturalist,neitherCuviernorLacépède,neitherProfessorDumerilnorProfessordeQuatrefages,wouldhaveacceptedtheexistenceofsuchamonstersightunseenspecifically,unseenbytheirownscientificeyes.
Strikinganaverageofobservationstakenatdifferenttimesrejectingthosetimidestimatesthatgavetheobjectalengthof200feet,andignoringthoseexaggeratedviewsthatsawitasamilewideandthreelongyoucouldstillassertthatthisphenomenalcreaturegreatlyexceededthedimensionsofanythingthenknowntoichthyologists,ifitexistedatall.

CaptainBakeratfirstthoughthewasinthepresenceofanunknownreef;hewasevenabouttofixitsexactpositionwhentwowaterspoutsshotoutofthisinexplicableobjectandspranghissingintotheairsome150feet.

Theyevenreprintedreportsfromancienttimes:theviewsofAristotleandPlinyacceptingtheexistenceofsuchmonsters,thentheNorwegianstoriesofBishopPontoppidan,thenarrativesofPaulEgede,andfinallythereportsofCaptainHarringtonwhosegoodfaithisabovesuspicioninwhichheclaimshesaw,whileaboardtheCastilianin1857,oneofthoseenormousserpentsthat,untilthen,hadfrequentedonlytheseasofFrance'soldextremistnewspaper,TheConstitutionalist.

TheScotiahadn'trunafoulofsomething,ithadbeenfouled,andbyacuttingorperforatinginstrumentratherthanabluntone.
Thisencounterseemedsominorthatnobodyonboardwouldhavebeendisturbedbyit,haditnotbeenfortheshoutsofcrewmeninthehold,whoclimbedondeckyelling:
"We'resinking!We'resinking!"
Atfirstthepassengerswerequitefrightened,butCaptainAndersonhastenedtoreassurethem.
Infact,therecouldbenoimmediatedanger.
Dividedintosevencompartmentsbywatertightbulkheads,theScotiacouldbraveanyleakwithimpunity.
CaptainAndersonimmediatelymadehiswayintothehold.

TheengineersthenproceededtoinspecttheScotia,whichhadbeenputindrydock.Theycouldn'tbelievetheireyes.
Twoandahalfmetersbelowitswaterline,theregapedasymmetricalgashintheshapeofanisoscelestriangle.
Thisbreachinthesheetironwassoperfectlyformed,nopunchcouldhavedoneacleanerjobofit.
Consequently,itmusthavebeenproducedbyaperforatingtoolofuncommontoughnessplus,afterbeinglaunchedwithprodigiouspowerandthenpiercingfourcentimetersofsheetiron,thistoolhadneededtowithdrawitselfbyabackwardmotiontrulyinexplicable.

Nowthen,justlyorunjustly,itwasthe"monster"whostoodaccusedoftheirdisappearance;andsince,thankstoit,travelbetweenthevariouscontinentshadbecomemoreandmoredangerous,thepublicspokeupanddemandedstraightoutthat,atallcost,theseasbepurgedofthisfearsomecetacean.
