Traders,shipowners,captainsofvessels,skippers,andmastermarinersfromEuropeandAmerica,navalofficersfromeverycountry,andattheirheelsthevariousnationalgovernmentsonthesetwocontinents,wereallextremelydisturbedbythebusiness. Inessence,overaperiodoftimeseveralshipshadencountered"anenormousthing"atsea,alongspindle–shapedobject,sometimesgivingoffaphosphorescentglow,infinitelybiggerandfasterthananywhale. Therelevantdataonthisapparition,asrecordedinvariouslogbooks,agreedprettycloselyastothestructureoftheobjectorcreatureinquestion,itsunprecedentedspeedofmovement,itsstartlinglocomotivepower,andtheuniquevitalitywithwhichitseemedtobegifted. Ifitwasacetacean,itexceededinbulkanywhalepreviouslyclassifiedbyscience. Nonaturalist,neitherCuviernorLacépède,neitherProfessorDumerilnorProfessordeQuatrefages,wouldhaveacceptedtheexistenceofsuchamonstersightunseen—specifically,unseenbytheirownscientificeyes. Strikinganaverageofobservationstakenatdifferenttimes—rejectingthosetimidestimatesthatgavetheobjectalengthof200feet,andignoringthoseexaggeratedviewsthatsawitasamilewideandthreelong—youcouldstillassertthatthisphenomenalcreaturegreatlyexceededthedimensionsofanythingthenknowntoichthyologists,ifitexistedatall. Nowthen,itdidexist,thiswasanundeniablefact;andsincethehumanminddotesonobjectsofwonder,youcanunderstandtheworldwideexcitementcausedbythisunearthlyapparition. Asforrelegatingittotherealmoffiction,thatchargehadtobedropped. Inessence,onJuly20,1866,thesteamerGovernorHigginson,fromtheCalcutta&BurnachSteamNavigationCo.,encounteredthismovingmassfivemilesofftheeasternshoresofAustralia. CaptainBakeratfirstthoughthewasinthepresenceofanunknownreef;hewasevenabouttofixitsexactpositionwhentwowaterspoutsshotoutofthisinexplicableobjectandspranghissingintotheairsome150feet. So,unlessthisreefwassubjecttotheintermittenteruptionsofageyser,theGovernorHigginsonhadfairandhonestdealingswithsomeaquaticmammal,untilthenunknown,thatcouldspurtfromitsblowholeswaterspoutsmixedwithairandsteam. SimilareventswerelikewiseobservedinPacificseas,onJuly23ofthesameyear,bytheChristopherColumbusfromtheWestIndia&PacificSteamNavigationCo. Consequently,thisextraordinarycetaceancouldtransferitselffromonelocalitytoanotherwithstartlingswiftness,sincewithinanintervalofjustthreedays,theGovernorHigginsonandtheChristopherColumbushadobserveditattwopositionsonthechartsseparatedbyadistanceofmorethan700nauticalleagues. Fifteendayslaterand2,000leaguesfarther,theHelvetiafromtheCompagnieNationaleandtheShannonfromtheRoyalMailline,runningonoppositetacksinthatpartoftheAtlanticlyingbetweentheUnitedStatesandEurope,respectivelysignaledeachotherthatthemonsterhadbeensightedinlatitude42°15'northandlongitude60°35'westofthemeridianofGreenwich. Fromtheirsimultaneousobservations,theywereabletoestimatethemammal'sminimumlengthatmorethan350Englishfeet;*thiswasbecauseboththeShannonandtheHelvetiawereofsmallerdimensions,althougheachmeasured100metersstemtostern. Inthosenewspapersshortofcopy,yousawthereappearanceofeverygiganticimaginarycreature,from"MobyDick,"thatdreadfulwhitewhalefromtheHighArcticregions,tothestupendouskrakenwhosetentaclescouldentwinea500–toncraftanddragitintotheoceandepths. Theyevenreprintedreportsfromancienttimes:theviewsofAristotleandPlinyacceptingtheexistenceofsuchmonsters,thentheNorwegianstoriesofBishopPontoppidan,thenarrativesofPaulEgede,andfinallythereportsofCaptainHarrington—whosegoodfaithisabovesuspicion—inwhichheclaimshesaw,whileaboardtheCastilianin1857,oneofthoseenormousserpentsthat,untilthen,hadfrequentedonlytheseasofFrance'soldextremistnewspaper,TheConstitutionalist. Aninterminabledebatethenbrokeoutbetweenbelieversandskepticsinthescholarlysocietiesandscientificjournals. The"monsterquestion"inflamedallminds. Finally,inamuch–fearedsatiricaljournal,anarticlebyitsmostpopularcolumnistfinishedoffthemonsterforgood,spurningitinthestyleofHippolytusrepulsingtheamorousadvancesofhisstepmotherPhædra,andgivingthecreatureitsquietusamidauniversalburstoflaughter.Withaddefeatedscience. Duringthefirstmonthsoftheyear1867,thequestionseemedtobeburied,anditdidn'tseemdueforresurrection,whennewfactswerebroughttothepublic'sattention. Butnowitwasnolongeranissueofascientificproblemtobesolved,butaquiterealandseriousdangertobeavoided.Thequestiontookanentirelynewturn. Themonsteragainbecameanislet,rock,orreef,butarunawayreef,unfixedandelusive. OnMarch5,1867,theMoravianfromtheMontrealOceanCo.,lyingduringthenightinlatitude27°30'andlongitude72°15',ranitsstarboardquarterafoulofarockmarkedonnochartsofthesewaterways. Underthecombinedeffortsofwindand400–horsepowersteam,itwastravelingataspeedofthirteenknots. Withoutthehighqualityofitshull,theMoravianwouldsurelyhavesplitopenfromthiscollisionandgonedowntogetherwiththose237passengersitwasbringingbackfromCanada. Thisaccidenthappenedaroundfiveo'clockinthemorning,justasdaywasbeginningtobreak. Theofficersonwatchrushedtothecraft'sstern. Theyexaminedtheoceanwiththemostscrupulouscare. Theysawnothingexceptastrongeddybreakingthreecablelengthsout,asifthosesheetsofwaterhadbeenviolentlychurned. Thesite'sexactbearingsweretaken,andtheMoraviancontinuedoncourseapparentlyundamaged. Haditrunafoulofanunderwaterrockorthewreckageofsomeenormousderelictship?Theywereunabletosay. Butwhentheyexamineditsundersidesintheserviceyard,theydiscoveredthatpartofitskeelhadbeensmashed. Soin1867thiscompanyownedtwelveships,eightwithpaddlewheelsandfourwithpropellers. IfIgivethesehighlycondenseddetails,itissoeveryonecanfullyunderstandtheimportanceofthismaritimetransportationcompany,knowntheworldoverforitsshrewdmanagement. Notransoceanicnavigationalundertakinghasbeenconductedwithmoreability,nobusinessdealingshavebeencrownedwithgreatersuccess. Intwenty–sixyearsCunardshipshavemade2,000Atlanticcrossingswithoutsomuchasavoyagecanceled,adelayrecorded,aman,acraft,orevenaletterlost. Accordingly,despitestrongcompetitionfromFrance,passengersstillchoosetheCunardlineinpreferencetoallothers,ascanbeseeninarecentsurveyofofficialdocuments. At4:17intheafternoon,duringahighteaforpassengersgatheredinthemainlounge,acollisionoccurred,scarcelynoticeableonthewhole,affectingtheScotia'shullinthatquarteralittleasternofitsportpaddlewheel. TheScotiahadn'trunafoulofsomething,ithadbeenfouled,andbyacuttingorperforatinginstrumentratherthanabluntone. Thisencounterseemedsominorthatnobodyonboardwouldhavebeendisturbedbyit,haditnotbeenfortheshoutsofcrewmeninthehold,whoclimbedondeckyelling: "We'resinking!We'resinking!" Atfirstthepassengerswerequitefrightened,butCaptainAndersonhastenedtoreassurethem. Infact,therecouldbenoimmediatedanger. Dividedintosevencompartmentsbywatertightbulkheads,theScotiacouldbraveanyleakwithimpunity. CaptainAndersonimmediatelymadehiswayintothehold. Hediscoveredthatthefifthcompartmenthadbeeninvadedbythesea,andthespeedofthisinvasionprovedthattheleakwasconsiderable. Fortunatelythiscompartmentdidn'tcontaintheboilers,becausetheirfurnaceswouldhavebeenabruptlyextinguished. CaptainAndersoncalledanimmediatehalt,andoneofhissailorsdiveddowntoassessthedamage. Withinmomentstheyhadlocatedaholetwometersinwidthonthesteamer'sunderside. Suchaleakcouldnotbepatched,andwithitspaddlewheelshalfswamped,theScotiahadnochoicebuttocontinueitsvoyage. Bythenitlay300milesfromCapeClear,andafterthreedaysofdelaythatfilledLiverpoolwithacuteanxiety,itenteredthecompanydocks. TheengineersthenproceededtoinspecttheScotia,whichhadbeenputindrydock.Theycouldn'tbelievetheireyes. Twoandahalfmetersbelowitswaterline,theregapedasymmetricalgashintheshapeofanisoscelestriangle. Thisbreachinthesheetironwassoperfectlyformed,nopunchcouldhavedoneacleanerjobofit. Consequently,itmusthavebeenproducedbyaperforatingtoolofuncommontoughness—plus,afterbeinglaunchedwithprodigiouspowerandthenpiercingfourcentimetersofsheetiron,thistoolhadneededtowithdrawitselfbyabackwardmotiontrulyinexplicable. Thiswasthelaststraw,anditresultedinarousingpublicpassionsalloveragain. Indeed,fromthismomenton,anymaritimecasualtywithoutanestablishedcausewaschargedtothemonster'saccount. Thisoutrageousanimalhadtoshoulderresponsibilityforallderelictvessels,whosenumbersareunfortunatelyconsiderable,sinceoutofthose3,000shipswhoselossesarerecordedannuallyatthemarineinsurancebureau,thefigureforsteamorsailingshipssupposedlylostwithallhands,intheabsenceofanynews,amountstoatleast200! Nowthen,justlyorunjustly,itwasthe"monster"whostoodaccusedoftheirdisappearance;andsince,thankstoit,travelbetweenthevariouscontinentshadbecomemoreandmoredangerous,thepublicspokeupanddemandedstraightoutthat,atallcost,theseasbepurgedofthisfearsomecetacean.
