Ithadsetitselfsteadfastlytowardscomfortandease,abalancedsocietywithsecurityandpermanencyasitswatchword,ithadattaineditshopes—tocometothisatlast. Once,lifeandpropertymusthavereachedalmostabsolutesafety. Therichhadbeenassuredofhiswealthandcomfort,thetoilerassuredofhislifeandwork. Nodoubtinthatperfectworldtherehadbeennounemployedproblem,nosocialquestionleftunsolved.Andagreatquiethadfollowed. TheUnder–worldbeingincontactwithmachinery,which,howeverperfect,stillneedssomelittlethoughtoutsidehabit,hadprobablyretainedperforcerathermoreinitiative,iflessofeveryotherhumancharacter,thantheUpper. Andwhenothermeatfailedthem,theyturnedtowhatoldhabithadhithertoforbidden. SoIsayIsawitinmylastviewoftheworldofEightHundredandTwoThousandSevenHundredandOne.
