Ruggedo,dancingwithterrorandutteringloudcries,nowleapedupontheseatofhisthronetoescapetheeggs,whichhadrolledsteadilytowardhim. Perhapstheseeggs,sentbythewiseandcraftyTititi-Hoochoo,wereinsomewayenchanted,fortheyallrolleddirectlyafterRuggedoandwhentheyreachedthethronewherehehadtakenrefugetheybeganrollingupthelegstotheseat. TheKingstoodtrembling,hiseyesstaringinterror,untiltheywerebuthalfayarddistant;thenwithanagileleaphejumpedclearoverthemandmadearushforthepassagethatledtotheouterentrance. Ofcoursethedragonwasinhisway,beingchainedinthepassagewithhisheadinthecavern,butwhenhesawtheKingmakingtowardhimhecrouchedaslowashecouldanddroppedhischintothefloor,leavingasmallspacebetweenhisbodyandtheroofofthepassage. Ruggedodidnothesitateaninstant.Impelledbyfear,heleapedtothedragon'snoseandthenscrambledtohisback,wherehesucceededinsqueezinghimselfthroughtheopening. Aftertheheadwaspassedtherewasmoreroomandheslidalongthedragon'sscalestohistailandthenranasfastashislegswouldcarryhimtotheentrance. Notpausinghere,sogreatwashisfright,theKingdashedondownthemountainpath,butbeforehehadgoneveryfarhestumbledandfell. Butnothinghappened.Theeggsdidnotdisappear,ashehadexpected;soherepeatedthecharmasecondtime.
