Asthewinterdayspassed,Tommylearnedthatitwasveryhardforhimtorunfastinalight,drysnowthatthroughsuchsnowadogcouldrunmuchfasterthanhecould.

Tommyandhismothercouldseerabbittracksallaroundthem;andtheyhadverygoodluckhunting.

Theyhadturnedtowardhome,whenadogbayedsomewherebehindthem,andprettysoonMrs.Foxsawthattheywerebeingfollowed.
SheandTommystartedtorun.AndTommysawthattherewasonemorebadthingaboutwinter.
SwiftRiver,andallthelittlebrooks,werecoveredwiththickiceandtherewasnochanceatallforhimandhismothertorunthroughshallowwaterandthrowthedogofftheirscent.
ItwasthatstrangedogthatwaschasingthemtheonethatbelongedtoFarmerGreen’shiredman.
Hewasaveryfastrunner,andinspiteoftheusualtricksthatfoxesknow,Mrs.FoxandTommycouldnotlosehim.

Stopfussing!Mrs.Foxsaid,lookingoverhershoulderatTommy.We’renotgoingtotheriver.
Youjustmindmeandyou’llsee,inafewminutes,thatwecanfoolthatdog.
Andshekeptonrunning,withTommyrightatherheels.
