Hehadmadeuphismindthathewouldgobacktothatsametree,whichwasstillnotquitegnawedthrough;andhehopedthathewouldsucceedinhavinghispicturetakenagain. Likemanyotherpeople,BrownieBeaverfeltthathecouldnothavetoomuchofagoodthing. Therewasanotherreason,too,forhisgoingbacktothetree. Ifthelightflaredagainandtheclicksoundedinthebushes,Brownieintendedtogorightintothethicketandgethispicturebeforeanybodyelsecouldcarryitawaywithhim. (Youcanunderstandhowlittleheunderstoodabouttakingphotographs.) Well,thedarkfoundBrowniebackatthetreeoncemore.Andhebeganoncemoretognawatit. Hetriedtolookpleasant,too,becausehehadheardthatthatwasthewayoneshouldlookwhenhavinghispicturetaken. Hefounditratherdifficult,gnawingchipsoutofthetreeandsmilingatthesametime.Buthewasanearnestyoungsterandhedidthebesthecould. BrownieBeaverkeptwishingtheflashlightwouldgooff,because—whatwithsmilingandgnawing—hisfacebegantoache.Butnoglareoflightbrokethroughthedarkness. ItwasnotlongbeforeBrowniehadgnawedawaysomanychipsthatthetreebegantonoditsheadfurtherandfurthertowardtheground. AndBrowniewishedthattheflashlightwouldhurryandgooffbeforethetreefell. Buttherewasnoteventhefaintestflickeroflight.Itwasmostannoying. AndBrowniewassodisappointedthatforonceheforgottobecarefulwhenhewascuttingdownatree. Hekepthiseyesonthebushesallthetime,insteadofonthetree—asheshouldhavedone. Andallthetimethetreeleanedmoreandmore. Atlasttherewasasnap!BrownieBeavershouldhaveknownwhatthatmeant. Buthewassoeagertohavehispicturetakenthathemistookthesnapfortheclickthathehadfirstheardalmostaweekbefore. Hethoughtitmustbetheclickofacamerahiddeninthebushes. Andhestoodverystillandlookedextremelypleasant. Now,BrownieBeavershouldhaveknownbetter. Butlikemostpeople,foroncehemadeamistake. Whathereallyheardwasthetreesnapping. Andbeforehecouldjumpoutofthewaythetreecamecrashingdownuponhimandpinnedhimfasttotheground. Hesawaflashoflight,tobesure,andagoodmanystars. Butallthatonlycamefromtheknockonhisheadwhichthetreegavehim.
