Andashegnawed,heslowlysidledroundandroundthetree,untilatlastonlytheheartofthetreewaslefttokeepthetreefromtopplingover. ThenBrownieBeaverwouldstophisgnawingandlookallabout,topickoutaplacewherehewantedthetreetofall. AndassoonasBrowniehadmadeuphismindaboutthat,hequicklygnawedafewmorechipsoutoftheheartofthetreeonthesidetowardthespotwhereheintendedittocometopplingdownupontheground. BrownieBeaverwouldnothavetognawlongbeforethetreewouldbegintolean.Allthetimeitleanedmoreandmore. Andthefurtheroveritsagged,thefasterittipped. Luckily,BrownieBeaveralwaysknewjusttherightmomenttojumpoutofthewaybeforethetreefell. Ifyouhadeverseenhimyoumighthavethoughthewasfrightened,becauseheneverfailedtorunawayandhideasthetreecrasheddownwithasoundalmostlikethunder. ButBrowniewasnotatallfrightened.Hewasmerelycareful. Knowingwhataloudnoisethefallingtreewouldmake,andthatitmightleadaman(orsomeotherenemy)tocomeprowlingaround,toseewhathadhappened,Brownieusedtostayhiddenuntilhefeltquitesurethatnoonewasgoingtotroublehim. Youcanunderstandthatwaiting,ashedid,wasnoeasymatterwhenyoustoptorememberthatoneofBrownie’sreasonsforcuttingdownatreewasthathewantedtoeatthetenderbarktobefoundinthetree-top. Itwasexactlylikeknowingyourdinnerwasonthetable,allreadyforyou,andhavingtohideinsomedarkcornerforhalfanhour,beforegoingintothedining-room. Youknowhowhungryyouwouldget,ifyouhadtodothat.
