TheKingoftheJolliginkithoughtitwouldbeeasyforhisarmytofindthem,becausetheDoctorwasinastrangelandandwouldnotknowhisway.
Buthewaswrong;becausethemonkey,CheeChee,knewallthepathsthroughthejunglebettereventhantheKing'smendid.
AndheledtheDoctorandhispetstotheverythickestpartoftheforestaplacewherenomanhadeverbeenbeforeandhidthemallinabighollowtreebetweenhighrocks.

Sotheretheystayedthewholenightthrough.
TheyoftenheardtheKing'smensearchingandtalkinginthejungleroundabout.Buttheywerequitesafe,fornooneknewofthathidingplacebutCheeCheenoteventheothermonkeys.
Atlast,whendaylightbegantocomethroughthethickleavesoverhead,theyheardQueenErmintrudesayinginaverytiredvoicethatitwasnouselookinganymorethattheymightaswellgobackandgetsomesleep.
Assoonasthesoldiershadallgonehome,CheeCheebroughttheDoctorandhisanimalsoutofthehidingplaceandtheysetofffortheLandoftheMonkeys.
Itwasalong,longway;andtheyoftengotverytiredespeciallyGubGub.Butwhenhecriedtheygavehimmilkoutofthecocoanutswhichhewasveryfondof.
Theyalwayshadplentytoeatanddrink;becauseCheeCheeandPolynesiaknewallthedifferentkindsoffruitsandvegetablesthatgrowinthejungle,andwheretofindthemlikedatesandfigsandgroundnutsandgingerandyams.
Theyusedtomaketheirlemonadeoutofthejuiceofwildoranges,sweetenedwithhoneywhichtheygotfromthebees'nestsinhollowtrees.
Nomatterwhatitwastheyaskedfor,CheeCheeandPolynesiaalwaysseemedtobeabletogetitforthemorsomethinglikeit.
TheyevengottheDoctorsometobaccooneday,whenhehadfinishedwhathehadbroughtwithhimandwantedtosmoke.
Atnighttheysleptintentsmadeofpalmleaves,onthick,softbedsofdriedgrass.
Andafterawhiletheygotusedtowalkingsuchalotanddidnotgetsotiredandenjoyedthelifeoftravelverymuch.
Buttheywerealwaysgladwhenthenightcameandtheystoppedfortheirrestingtime.
ThentheDoctorusedtomakealittlefireofsticks;andaftertheyhadhadtheirsupper,theywouldsitrounditinaring,listeningtoPolynesiasingingsongsaboutthesea,ortoCheeCheetellingstoriesofthejungle.
AndmanyofthetalesthatCheeCheetoldwereveryinteresting.
BecausealthoughthemonkeyshadnohistorybooksoftheirownbeforeDoctorDolittlecametowritethemforthem,theyremembereverythingthathappensbytellingstoriestotheirchildren.
AndCheeCheespokeofmanythingshisgrandmotherhadtoldhimtalesoflong,long,longago,beforeNoahandtheFloodofthedayswhenmendressedinbearskinsandlivedinholesintherockandatetheirmuttonraw,becausetheydidnotknowwhatcookingwashavingneverseenafire.
AndhetoldthemoftheGreatMammothsandLizards,aslongasatrain,thatwanderedoverthemountainsinthosetimes,nibblingfromthetreetops.
Andoftentheygotsointerestedlistening,thatwhenhehadfinishedtheyfoundtheirfirehadgonerightout;andtheyhadtoscurryroundtogetmoresticksandbuildanewone.
NowwhentheKing'sarmyhadgonebackandtoldtheKingthattheycouldn'tfindtheDoctor,theKingsentthemoutagainandtoldthemtheymuststayinthejungletilltheycaughthim.
Soallthistime,whiletheDoctorandhisanimalsweregoingalongtowardstheLandoftheMonkeys,thinkingthemselvesquitesafe,theywerestillbeingfollowedbytheKing'smen.
IfCheeCheehadknownthis,hewouldmostlikelyhavehiddenthemagain.Buthedidn'tknowit.
OnedayCheeCheeclimbedupahighrockandlookedoutoverthetreetops.AndwhenhecamedownhesaidtheywerenowquiteclosetotheLandoftheMonkeysandwouldsoonbethere.
Andthatsameevening,sureenough,theysawCheeChee'scousinandalotofothermonkeys,whohadnotyetgotsick,sittinginthetreesbytheedgeofaswamp,lookingandwaitingforthem.
Andwhentheysawthefamousdoctorreallycome,thesemonkeysmadeatremendousnoise,cheeringandwavingleavesandswingingoutofthebranchestogreethim.
TheywantedtocarryhisbagandhistrunkandeverythinghehadandoneofthebiggeronesevencarriedGubGubwhohadgottiredagain.
Thentwoofthemrushedoninfronttotellthesickmonkeysthatthegreatdoctorhadcomeatlast.
ButtheKing'smen,whowerestillfollowing,hadheardthenoiseofthemonkeyscheering;andtheyatlastknewwheretheDoctorwas,andhastenedontocatchhim.
ThebigmonkeycarryingGubGubwascomingalongbehindslowly,andhesawtheCaptainofthearmysneakingthroughthetrees.SohehurriedaftertheDoctorandtoldhimtorun.
Thentheyallranharderthantheyhadeverrunintheirlives;andtheKing'smen,comingafterthem,begantoruntoo;andtheCaptainranhardestofall.
ThentheDoctortrippedoverhismedicinebagandfelldowninthemud,andtheCaptainthoughthewouldsurelycatchhimthistime.
ButtheCaptainhadverylongearsthoughhishairwasveryshort.
AndashesprangforwardtotakeholdoftheDoctor,oneofhisearscaughtfastinatree;andtherestofthearmyhadtostopandhelphim.
BythistimetheDoctorhadpickedhimselfup,andontheywentagain,runningandrunning.AndCheeCheeshouted,
"It'sallright!Wehaven'tfartogonow!"
ButbeforetheycouldgetintotheLandoftheMonkeys,theycametoasteepcliffwithariverflowingbelow.
ThiswastheendoftheKingdomofJolliginki;andtheLandoftheMonkeyswasontheothersideacrosstheriver.
AndJip,thedog,lookeddownovertheedgeofthesteep,steepcliffandsaid,
"Golly!Howareweevergoingtogetacross?"
"Oh,dear!"saidGubGub."TheKing'smenarequiteclosenowLookatthem!Iamafraidwearegoingtobetakenbacktoprisonagain."Andhebegantoweep.
Butthebigmonkeywhowascarryingthepigdroppedhimonthegroundandcriedouttotheothermonkeys.
"Boysabridge!Quick!Makeabridge!We'veonlyaminutetodoit.They'vegottheCaptainloose,andhe'scomingonlikeadeer.Getlively!Abridge!Abridge!"
TheDoctorbegantowonderwhattheyweregoingtomakeabridgeoutof,andhegazedaroundtoseeiftheyhadanyboardshiddenanyplace.
Butwhenhelookedbackatthecliff,there,hangingacrosstheriver,wasabridgeallreadyforhimmadeoflivingmonkeys!
Forwhilehisbackwasturned,themonkeysquickasaflashhadmadethemselvesintoabridge,justbyholdinghandsandfeet.
AndthebigoneshoutedtotheDoctor,"Walkover!Walkoverallofyouhurry!"
GubGubwasabitscared,walkingonsuchanarrowbridgeatthatdizzyheightabovetheriver.Buthegotoverallright;andsodidallofthem.
JohnDolittlewasthelasttocross.Andjustashewasgettingtotheotherside,theKing'smencamerushinguptotheedgeofthecliff.
Thentheyshooktheirfistsandyelledwithrage.Fortheysawtheyweretoolate.
TheDoctorandallhisanimalsweresafeintheLandoftheMonkeysandthebridgewaspulledacrosstotheotherside.
ThenCheeCheeturnedtotheDoctorandsaid,
"Manygreatexplorersandgraybeardednaturalistshavelainlongweekshiddeninthejunglewaitingtoseethemonkeysdothattrick.
Butweneverletawhitemangetaglimpseofitbefore.
Youarethefirsttoseethefamous'BridgeofApes.'"
AndtheDoctorfeltverypleased.
