Asregardeditsorigintherewerevariousexplanations,allofwhichmustnecessarilyhavebeenconjectural.
SomeaffirmedthattheReverendMr.Dimmesdale,ontheverydaywhenHesterPrynnefirstworeherignominiousbadge,hadbegunacourseofpenancewhichheafterwards,insomanyfutilemethods,followedoutbyinflictingahideoustortureonhimself.
Otherscontendedthatthestigmahadnotbeenproduceduntilalongtimesubsequent,whenoldRogerChillingworth,beingapotentnecromancer,hadcausedittoappear,throughtheagencyofmagicandpoisonousdrugs.
Others,againandthosebestabletoappreciatetheminister’speculiarsensibility,andthewonderfuloperationofhisspirituponthebodywhisperedtheirbelief,thattheawfulsymbolwastheeffectoftheeveractivetoothofremorse,gnawingfromtheinmostheartoutwardly,andatlastmanifestingHeaven’sdreadfuljudgmentbythevisiblepresenceoftheletter.
Thereadermaychooseamongthesetheories.
Wehavethrownallthelightwecouldacquireupontheportent,andwouldgladly,nowthatithasdoneitsoffice,eraseitsdeepprintoutofourownbrain,wherelongmeditationhasfixeditinveryundesirabledistinctness.
Itissingular,nevertheless,thatcertainpersons,whowerespectatorsofthewholescene,andprofessedneveroncetohaveremovedtheireyesfromtheReverendMr.Dimmesdale,deniedthattherewasanymarkwhateveronhisbreast,morethanonanewborninfant’s.
Neither,bytheirreport,hadhisdyingwordsacknowledged,norevenremotelyimplied,anytheslightestconnexiononhispart,withtheguiltforwhichHesterPrynnehadsolongwornthescarletletter.
Accordingtothesehighlyrespectablewitnesses,theminister,consciousthathewasdyingconscious,also,thatthereverenceofthemultitudeplacedhimalreadyamongsaintsandangelshaddesired,byyieldinguphisbreathinthearmsofthatfallenwoman,toexpresstotheworldhowutterlynugatoryisthechoicestofman’sownrighteousness.
Afterexhaustinglifeinhiseffortsformankind’sspiritualgood,hehadmadethemannerofhisdeathaparable,inordertoimpressonhisadmirersthemightyandmournfullesson,that,intheviewofInfinitePurity,wearesinnersallalike.
Itwastoteachthem,thattheholiestamongstushasbutattainedsofarabovehisfellowsastodiscernmoreclearlytheMercywhichlooksdown,andrepudiatemoreutterlythephantomofhumanmerit,whichwouldlookaspiringlyupward.
Withoutdisputingatruthsomomentous,wemustbeallowedtoconsiderthisversionofMr.Dimmesdale’sstoryasonlyaninstanceofthatstubbornfidelitywithwhichaman’sfriendsandespeciallyaclergyman’swillsometimesupholdhischaracter,whenproofs,clearasthemiddaysunshineonthescarletletter,establishhimafalseandsinstainedcreatureofthedust.
Theauthoritywhichwehavechieflyfollowedamanuscriptofolddate,drawnupfromtheverbaltestimonyofindividuals,someofwhomhadknownHesterPrynne,whileothershadheardthetalefromcontemporarywitnessesfullyconfirmstheviewtakenintheforegoingpages.
Amongmanymoralswhichpressuponusfromthepoorminister’smiserableexperience,weputonlythisintoasentence:Betrue!Betrue!Betrue!
Showfreelytotheworld,ifnotyourworst,yetsometraitwherebytheworstmaybeinferred!
Nothingwasmoreremarkablethanthechangewhichtookplace,almostimmediatelyafterMr.Dimmesdale’sdeath,intheappearanceanddemeanouroftheoldmanknownasRogerChillingworth.
Allhisstrengthandenergyallhisvitalandintellectualforceseemedatoncetodeserthim,insomuchthathepositivelywitheredup,shrivelledawayandalmostvanishedfrommortalsight,likeanuprootedweedthatlieswiltinginthesun.
Thisunhappymanhadmadetheveryprincipleofhislifetoconsistinthepursuitandsystematicexerciserevenge;andwhen,byitscompletesttriumphconsummationthatevilprinciplewasleftwithnofurthermaterialtosupportitwhen,inshort,therewasnomoreDevil’sworkonearthforhimtodo,itonlyremainedfortheunhumanisedmortaltobetakehimselfwhitherhismasterwouldfindhimtasksenough,andpayhimhiswagesduly.
But,toalltheseshadowybeings,solongournearacquaintancesaswellRogerChillingworthashiscompanionswewouldfainbemerciful.
Itisacurioussubjectofobservationandinquiry,whetherhatredandlovebenotthesamethingatbottom.
Each,initsutmostdevelopment,supposesahighdegreeofintimacyandheartknowledge;eachrendersoneindividualdependentforthefoodofhisaffectionsandspiritualfifeuponanother:eachleavesthepassionatelover,orthenolesspassionatehater,forlornanddesolatebythewithdrawalofhissubject.
Philosophicallyconsidered,therefore,thetwopassionsseemessentiallythesame,exceptthatonehappenstobeseeninacelestialradiance,andtheotherinaduskyandluridglow.
Inthespiritualworld,theoldphysicianandtheministermutualvictimsastheyhavebeenmay,unawares,havefoundtheirearthlystockofhatredandantipathytransmutedintogoldenlove.
Leavingthisdiscussionapart,wehaveamatterofbusinesstocommunicatetothereader.
AtoldRogerChillingworth’sdecease,(whichtookplacewithintheyear),andbyhislastwillandtestament,ofwhichGovernorBellinghamandtheReverendMr.Wilsonwereexecutors,hebequeathedaveryconsiderableamountofproperty,bothhereandinEnglandtolittlePearl,thedaughterofHesterPrynne.
SoPearltheelfchildthedemonoffspring,assomepeopleuptothatepochpersistedinconsideringherbecametherichestheiressofherdayintheNewWorld.
Notimprobablythiscircumstancewroughtaverymaterialchangeinthepublicestimation;andhadthemotherandchildremainedhere,littlePearlatamarriageableperiodoflifemighthavemingledherwildbloodwiththelineageofthedevoutestPuritanamongthemall.
But,innolongtimeafterthephysician’sdeath,thewearerofthescarletletterdisappeared,andPearlalongwithher.
Formanyyears,thoughavaguereportwouldnowandthenfinditswayacrossthesealikeashapelesspieceofdriftwoodtossedashorewiththeinitialsofanameuponityetnotidingsofthemunquestionablyauthenticwerereceived.
Thestoryofthescarletlettergrewintoalegend.
Itsspell,however,wasstillpotent,andkeptthescaffoldawfulwherethepoorministerhaddied,andlikewisethecottagebytheseashorewhereHesterPrynnehaddwelt.
Nearthislatterspot,oneafternoonsomechildrenwereatplay,whentheybeheldatallwomaninagrayrobeapproachthecottagedoor.
Inallthoseyearsithadneveroncebeenopened;buteithersheunlockeditorthedecayingwoodandironyieldedtoherhand,orsheglidedshadowlikethroughtheseimpedimentsand,atallevents,wentin.
Onthethresholdshepausedturnedpartlyroundforperchancetheideaofenteringaloneandallsochanged,thehomeofsointenseaformerlife,wasmoredrearyanddesolatethanevenshecouldbear.
Butherhesitationwasonlyforaninstant,thoughlongenoughtodisplayascarletletteronherbreast.
AndHesterPrynnehadreturned,andtakenupherlongforsakenshame!ButwherewaslittlePearl?
Ifstillaliveshemustnowhavebeenintheflushandbloomofearlywomanhood.
Noneknewnoreverlearnedwiththefulnessofperfectcertaintywhethertheelfchildhadgonethusuntimelytoamaidengrave;orwhetherherwild,richnaturehadbeensoftenedandsubduedandmadecapableofawoman’sgentlehappiness.
ButthroughtheremainderofHester’slifetherewereindicationsthattherecluseofthescarletletterwastheobjectofloveandinterestwithsomeinhabitantofanotherland.
Letterscame,witharmorialsealsuponthem,thoughofbearingsunknowntoEnglishheraldry.
InthecottagetherewerearticlesofcomfortandluxurysuchasHesternevercaredtouse,butwhichonlywealthcouldhavepurchasedandaffectionhaveimaginedforher.
Thereweretriflestoo,littleornaments,beautifultokensofacontinualremembrance,thatmusthavebeenwroughtbydelicatefingersattheimpulseofafondheart.
AndonceHesterwasseenembroideringababygarmentwithsuchalavishrichnessofgoldenfancyaswouldhaveraisedapublictumulthadanyinfantthusapparelled,beenshowntooursoberhuedcommunity.
Infine,thegossipsofthatdaybelievedandMr.SurveyorPue,whomadeinvestigationsacenturylater,believedandoneofhisrecentsuccessorsinoffice,moreover,faithfullybelievesthatPearlwasnotonlyalive,butmarried,andhappy,andmindfulofhermother;andthatshewouldmostjoyfullyhaveentertainedthatsadandlonelymotheratherfireside.
ButtherewasamorereallifeforHesterPrynne,here,inNewEngland,thatinthatunknownregionwherePearlhadfoundahome.
Herehadbeenhersin;here,hersorrow;andherewasyettobeherpenitence.
Shehadreturned,therefore,andresumedofherownfreewill,fornotthesternestmagistrateofthatironperiodwouldhaveimposeditresumedthesymbolofwhichwehaverelatedsodarkatale.Neverafterwardsdiditquitherbosom.
But,inthelapseofthetoilsome,thoughtful,andselfdevotedyearsthatmadeupHester’slife,thescarletletterceasedtobeastigmawhichattractedtheworld’sscornandbitterness,andbecameatypeofsomethingtobesorrowedover,andlookeduponwithawe,yetwithreverencetoo.
And,asHesterPrynnehadnoselfishends,norlivedinanymeasureforherownprofitandenjoyment,peoplebroughtalltheirsorrowsandperplexities,andbesoughthercounsel,asonewhohadherselfgonethroughamightytrouble.
Women,moreespeciallyinthecontinuallyrecurringtrialsofwounded,wasted,wronged,misplaced,orerringandsinfulpassionorwiththedrearyburdenofaheartunyielded,becauseunvaluedandunsoughtcametoHester’scottage,demandingwhytheyweresowretched,andwhattheremedy!
Hestercomfortedandcounselledthem,asbestshemight.
Sheassuredthem,too,ofherfirmbeliefthat,atsomebrighterperiod,whentheworldshouldhavegrownripeforit,inHeaven’sowntime,anewtruthwouldberevealed,inordertoestablishthewholerelationbetweenmanandwomanonasurergroundofmutualhappiness.
Earlierinlife,Hesterhadvainlyimaginedthatsheherselfmightbethedestinedprophetess,buthadlongsincerecognisedtheimpossibilitythatanymissionofdivineandmysterioustruthshouldbeconfidedtoawomanstainedwithsin,boweddownwithshame,orevenburdenedwithalifelongsorrow.
Theangelandapostleofthecomingrevelationmustbeawoman,indeed,butlofty,pure,andbeautiful,andwise;moreover,notthroughduskygrief,buttheetherealmediumofjoy;andshowinghowsacredloveshouldmakeushappy,bythetruesttestofalifesuccessfultosuchanend.
SosaidHesterPrynne,andglancedhersadeyesdownwardatthescarletletter.
And,aftermany,manyyears,anewgravewasdelved,nearanoldandsunkenone,inthatburialgroundbesidewhichKing’sChapelhassincebeenbuilt.
Itwasnearthatoldandsunkengrave,yetwithaspacebetween,asifthedustofthetwosleepershadnorighttomingle.Yetonetombstoneservedforboth.
Allaround,thereweremonumentscarvedwitharmorialbearings;andonthissimpleslabofslateasthecuriousinvestigatormaystilldiscern,andperplexhimselfwiththepurportthereappearedthesemblanceofanengravedescutcheon.
Itboreadevice,aherald’swordingofwhichmayserveforamottoandbriefdescriptionofournowconcludedlegend;sosombreisit,andrelievedonlybyoneeverglowingpointoflightgloomierthantheshadow.
