Frommypostofobservation,underthecanvasscreensofoneofthewagons,Icouldmakeoutturbanedheadspoppinguptohavealookatusfromamongtherocks,andanoccasionalscouthurryingnorthwardwiththenewsofourapproach. Itwasnot,however,untilwecameabreastoftheTeradaPass,agloomydefileboundedbygiganticcliffs,thattheAfridisbegantoshowinforce,thoughtheyhadambushedthemselvessocleverlythat,hadwenotbeenkeenlyonthelook-outforthem,wemighthavewalkedrightintothetrap. Asitwas,theconvoyhalted,uponwhichtheHillmen,seeingthattheywereobserved,openedaheavybutill-directedfireuponus. Withtheirblack,contorted,mockingfaces,theirfiercegestures,andtheirflutteringgarments,theywouldhavemadeastudyforanypainterwhowishedtoportrayMilton’sconceptionofthearmyofthedamned. Fromeverysidetheypressedinuntil,seeing,astheythought,nothingbetweenthemandvictory,theylefttheshelteroftherocksandcamerushingdown,afurious,howlingthrong,withthegreenbanneroftheProphetintheirvan. Nowwasourchance,andgloriouslyweutilizedit. Fromeverycrannyandslitofthewagonscameablazeoffire,everyshotofwhichtoldamongtheclose-packedmob. Twoorthreescorerolledoverlikerabbitsandtherestreeledforamoment,andthen,withtheirchiefsattheirhead,cameonagaininamagnificentrush. Itwasuseless,however,forundisciplinedmentoattempttofacesuchawell-directedfire. Theleaderswerebowledover,andtheothers,afterhesitatingforafewmoments,turnedandmadefortherocks. Itwasourturnnowtoassumetheoffensive.Thegunswereunlimberedandgrapepouredintothem,whileourlittleinfantryforceadvancedatthedouble,shootingandstabbingallwhomtheyovertook. NeverhadIknownthetideofbattleturnsorapidlyandsodecisively. Thesullenretreatbecameaflight,andtheflightapanic-strickenrout,untiltherewasnothingleftofthetribesmenexceptascattered,demoralisedrabbleflyingwildlytotheirnativefastnessesforshelterandprotection. Outofthisdarkarchwaytheresuddenlyemergedanoldman—suchavery,veryoldmanthatalltheotherveteranswhomIhaveseenwereaschickenscomparedwithhim.
