Fromherteacher–housemateshehadasardonicdescriptionofaMiddlewesternrailroad–divisiontown,ofthesamesizeasGopherPrairiebutdevoidoflawnsandtrees,atownwherethetrackssprawledalongthecinder–scabbedMainStreet,andtherailroadshops,drippingsootfromeavesanddoorway,rolledoutsmokeingreasycoils. Othertownsshecametoknowbyanecdote:aprairievillagewherethewindblewalldaylong,andthemudwastwofeetthickinspring,andinsummertheflyingsandscarrednew–paintedhousesanddustcoveredthefewflowerssetoutinpots. NewEnglandmill–townswiththehandslivinginrowsofcottageslikeblocksoflava. Arichfarming–centerinNewJersey,offtherailroad,furiouslypious,ruledbyoldmen,unbelievablyignorantoldmen,sittingaboutthegrocerytalkingofJamesG.Blaine. Fromherworkandfromherassociationwithwomenwhohadorganizedsuffrageassociationsinhostilecities,orhaddefendedpoliticalprisoners,shecaughtsomethingofanimpersonalattitude;sawthatshehadbeenastouchilypersonalasMaudDyer.
