Thesoundsofthebattlewereover,andtheyhadfedfattheirancientgrudge,andhadavengedtheirrecentquarrelwiththeMengwe,bythedestructionofawholecommunity. TheblackandmurkyatmospherethatfloatedaroundthespotwheretheHuronshadencamped,sufficientlyannouncedofitself,thefateofthatwanderingtribe;whilehundredsofravens,thatstruggledabovethesummitsofthemountains,orswept,innoisyflocks,acrossthewiderangesofthewoods,furnishedafrightfuldirectiontothesceneofthecombat. Inshort,anyeyeatallpractisedinthesignsofafrontierwarfaremighteasilyhavetracedallthoseunerringevidencesoftheruthlessresultswhichattendanIndianvengeance. Still,thesunroseontheLenapeanationofmourners. Noshoutsofsuccess,nosongsoftriumph,wereheard,inrejoicingsfortheirvictory. Thelateststragglerhadreturnedfromhisfellemployment,onlytostriphimselfoftheterrificemblemsofhisbloodycalling,andtojoininthelamentationsofhiscountrymen,asastrickenpeople. Prideandexultationweresupplantedbyhumility,andthefiercestofhumanpassionswasalreadysucceededbythemostprofoundandunequivocaldemonstrationsofgrief. Thelodgesweredeserted;butabroadbeltofearnestfacesencircledaspotintheirvicinity,whithereverythingpossessinglifehadrepaired,andwhereallwerenowcollected,indeepandawfulsilence. Thoughbeingsofeveryrankandage,ofbothsexes,andofallpursuits,hadunitedtoformthisbreathingwallofbodies,theywereinfluencedbyasingleemotion. Eacheyewasrivetedonthecenterofthatring,whichcontainedtheobjectsofsomuchandofsocommonaninterest. SixDelawaregirls,withtheirlong,dark,flowingtressesfallinglooselyacrosstheirbosoms,stoodapart,andonlygaveproofoftheirexistenceastheyoccasionallystrewedsweet–scentedherbsandforestflowersonalitteroffragrantplantsthat,underapallofIndianrobes,supportedallthatnowremainedoftheardent,high–souled,andgenerousCora. Herformwasconcealedinmanywrappersofthesamesimplemanufacture,andherfacewasshutforeverfromthegazeofmen. AtherfeetwasseatedthedesolateMunro. Hisagedheadwasbowednearlytotheearth,incompelledsubmissiontothestrokeofProvidence;butahiddenanguishstruggledabouthisfurrowedbrow,thatwasonlypartiallyconcealedbythecarelesslocksofgraythathadfallen,neglected,onhistemples. Gamutstoodathisside,hismeekheadbaredtotheraysofthesun,whilehiseyes,wanderingandconcerned,seemedtobeequallydividedbetweenthatlittlevolume,whichcontainedsomanyquaintbutholymaxims,andthebeinginwhosebehalfhissoulyearnedtoadministerconsolation. Heywardwasalsonigh,supportinghimselfagainstatree,andendeavoringtokeepdownthosesuddenrisingsofsorrowthatitrequiredhisutmostmanhoodtosubdue. Butsadandmelancholyasthisgroupmayeasilybeimagined,itwasfarlesstouchingthananother,thatoccupiedtheoppositespaceofthesamearea. Seated,asinlife,withhisformandlimbsarrangedingraveanddecentcomposure,Uncasappeared,arrayedinthemostgorgeousornamentsthatthewealthofthetribecouldfurnish. Richplumesnoddedabovehishead;wampum,gorgets,bracelets,andmedals,adornedhispersoninprofusion;thoughhisdulleyeandvacantlineamentstoostronglycontradictedtheidletaleofpridetheywouldconvey. DirectlyinfrontofthecorpseChingachgookwasplaced,withoutarms,paintoradornmentofanysort,exceptthebrightblueblazonryofhisrace,thatwasindeliblyimpressedonhisnakedbosom. Duringthelongperiodthatthetribehadthusbeencollected,theMohicanwarriorhadkeptasteady,anxiouslookonthecoldandsenselesscountenanceofhisson. Sorivetedandintensehadbeenthatgaze,andsochangelesshisattitude,thatastrangermightnothavetoldthelivingfromthedead,butfortheoccasionalgleamingsofatroubledspirit,thatshotathwartthedarkvisageofone,andthedeathlikecalmthathadforeversettledonthelineamentsoftheother. Thescoutwashardby,leaninginapensivepostureonhisownfatalandavengingweapon;whileTamenund,supportedbytheeldersofhisnation,occupiedahighplaceathand,whencehemightlookdownonthemuteandsorrowfulassemblageofhispeople. Justwithintheinneredgeofthecirclestoodasoldier,inthemilitaryattireofastrangenation;andwithoutitwashiswarhorse,inthecenterofacollectionofmounteddomestics,seeminglyinreadinesstoundertakesomedistantjourney. ThevestmentsofthestrangerannouncedhimtobeonewhoheldaresponsiblesituationnearthepersonofthecaptainoftheCanadas;andwho,asitwouldnowseem,findinghiserrandofpeacefrustratedbythefierceimpetuosityofhisallies,wascontenttobecomeasilentandsadspectatorofthefruitsofacontestthathehadarrivedtoolatetoanticipate. Thedaywasdrawingtothecloseofitsfirstquarter,andyethadthemultitudemaintaineditsbreathingstillnesssinceitsdawn. Nosoundlouderthanastifledsobhadbeenheardamongthem,norhadevenalimbbeenmovedthroughoutthatlongandpainfulperiod,excepttoperformthesimpleandtouchingofferingsthatweremade,fromtimetotime,incommemorationofthedead. ThepatienceandforbearanceofIndianfortitudecouldalonesupportsuchanappearanceofabstraction,asseemednowtohaveturnedeachdarkandmotionlessfigureintostone. Atlength,thesageoftheDelawaresstretchedforthanarm,andleaningontheshouldersofhisattendants,hearosewithanairasfeebleasifanotheragehadalreadyintervenedbetweenthemanwhohadmethisnationtheprecedingday,andhimwhonowtotteredonhiselevatedstand. “MenoftheLenape!”hesaid,inlow,hollowtones,thatsoundedlikeavoicechargedwithsomepropheticmission:“thefaceoftheManitouisbehindacloud! Hiseyeisturnedfromyou;Hisearsareshut;Histonguegivesnoanswer. Youseehimnot;yetHisjudgmentsarebeforeyou. Letyourheartsbeopenandyourspiritstellnolie.MenoftheLenape! thefaceoftheManitouisbehindacloud.” Asthissimpleandyetterribleannunciationstoleontheearsofthemultitude,astillnessasdeepandawfulsucceededasiftheveneratedspirittheyworshipedhadutteredthewordswithouttheaidofhumanorgans;andeventheinanimateUncasappearedabeingoflife,comparedwiththehumbledandsubmissivethrongbywhomhewassurrounded. Astheimmediateeffect,however,graduallypassedaway,alowmurmurofvoicescommencedasortofchantinhonorofthedead. Thesoundswerethoseoffemales,andwerethrillinglysoftandwailing. Thewordswereconnectedbynoregularcontinuation,butasoneceasedanothertookuptheeulogy,orlamentation,whicheveritmightbecalled,andgaveventtoheremotionsinsuchlanguageaswassuggestedbyherfeelingsandtheoccasion. Atintervalsthespeakerwasinterruptedbygeneralandloudburstsofsorrow,duringwhichthegirlsaroundthebierofCorapluckedtheplantsandflowersblindlyfromherbody,asifbewilderedwithgrief. But,inthemildermomentsoftheirplaint,theseemblemsofpurityandsweetnesswerecastbacktotheirplaces,witheverysignoftendernessandregret. Thoughrenderedlessconnectedbymanyandgeneralinterruptionsandoutbreakings,atranslationoftheirlanguagewouldhavecontainedaregulardescant,which,insubstance,mighthaveprovedtopossessatrainofconsecutiveideas. Agirl,selectedforthetaskbyherrankandqualifications,commencedbymodestallusionstothequalitiesofthedeceasedwarrior,embellishingherexpressionswiththoseorientalimagesthattheIndianshaveprobablybroughtwiththemfromtheextremesoftheothercontinent,andwhichformofthemselvesalinktoconnecttheancienthistoriesofthetwoworlds. Shecalledhimthe“pantherofhistribe”;anddescribedhimasonewhosemoccasinleftnotrailonthedews;whoseboundwasliketheleapofayoungfawn;whoseeyewasbrighterthanastarinthedarknight;andwhosevoice,inbattle,wasloudasthethunderoftheManitou. Sheremindedhimofthemotherwhoborehim,anddweltforciblyonthehappinessshemustfeelinpossessingsuchason. Shebadehimtellher,whentheymetintheworldofspirits,thattheDelawaregirlshadshedtearsabovethegraveofherchild,andhadcalledherblessed. Then,theywhosucceeded,changingtheirtonestoamilderandstillmoretenderstrain,alluded,withthedelicacyandsensitivenessofwomen,tothestrangermaiden,whohadlefttheupperearthatatimesonearhisowndeparture,astorenderthewilloftheGreatSpirittoomanifesttobedisregarded. Theyadmonishedhimtobekindtoher,andtohaveconsiderationforherignoranceofthoseartswhichweresonecessarytothecomfortofawarriorlikehimself. Theydwelleduponhermatchlessbeauty,andonhernobleresolution,withoutthetaintofenvy,andasangelsmaybethoughttodelightinasuperiorexcellence;adding,thattheseendowmentsshouldprovemorethanequivalentforanylittleimperfectioninhereducation. Afterwhich,othersagain,induesuccession,spoketothemaidenherself,inthelow,softlanguageoftendernessandlove. Theyexhortedhertobeofcheerfulmind,andtofearnothingforherfuturewelfare. Ahunterwouldbehercompanion,whoknewhowtoprovideforhersmallestwants;andawarriorwasathersidewhowasabletoprotectheagainsteverydanger. Theypromisedthatherpathshouldbepleasant,andherburdenlight. Theycautionedheragainstunavailingregretsforthefriendsofheryouth,andthesceneswhereherfatherhaddwelt;assuringherthatthe“blessedhuntinggroundsoftheLenape,”containedvalesaspleasant,streamsaspure;andflowersassweet,asthe“heavenofthepalefaces.” Theyadvisedhertobeattentivetothewantsofhercompanion,andnevertoforgetthedistinctionwhichtheManitouhadsowiselyestablishedbetweenthem. Then,inawildburstoftheirchanttheysangwithunitedvoicesthetemperoftheMohican’smind. Theypronouncedhimnoble,manlyandgenerous;allthatbecameawarrior,andallthatamaidmightlove. Clothingtheirideasinthemostremoteandsubtleimages,theybetrayed,that,intheshortperiodoftheirintercourse,theyhaddiscovered,withtheintuitiveperceptionoftheirsex,thetruantdispositionofhisinclinations. TheDelawaregirlshadfoundnofavorinhiseyes! Hewasofaracethathadoncebeenlordsontheshoresofthesaltlake,andhiswisheshadledhimbacktoapeoplewhodweltaboutthegravesofhisfathers. Whyshouldnotsuchapredilectionbeencouraged! Thatshewasofabloodpurerandricherthantherestofhernation,anyeyemighthaveseen;thatshewasequaltothedangersanddaringofalifeinthewoods,herconducthadproved;andnow,theyadded,the“wiseoneoftheearth”hadtransplantedhertoaplacewhereshewouldfindcongenialspirits,andmightbeforeverhappy. Then,withanothertransitioninvoiceandsubject,allusionsweremadetothevirginwhoweptintheadjacentlodge. Theycomparedhertoflakesofsnow;aspure,aswhite,asbrilliant,andasliabletomeltinthefierceheatsofsummer,orcongealinthefrostsofwinter. Theydoubtednotthatshewaslovelyintheeyesoftheyoungchief,whoseskinandwhosesorrowseemedsolikeherown;butthoughfarfromexpressingsuchapreference,itwasevidenttheydeemedherlessexcellentthanthemaidtheymourned. Stilltheydeniedhernoneedherrarecharmsmightproperlyclaim. Herringletswerecomparedtotheexuberanttendrilsofthevine,hereyetothebluevaultofheavens,andthemostspotlesscloud,withitsglowingflushofthesun,wasadmittedtobelessattractivethanherbloom. Duringtheseandsimilarsongsnothingwasaudiblebutthemurmursofthemusic;relieved,asitwas,orratherrenderedterrible,bythoseoccasionalburstsofgriefwhichmightbecalleditschoruses. TheDelawaresthemselveslistenedlikecharmedmen;anditwasveryapparent,bythevariationsoftheirspeakingcountenances,howdeepandtruewastheirsympathy. EvenDavidwasnotreluctanttolendhisearstothetonesofvoicessosweet;andlongerethechantwasended,hisgazeannouncedthathissoulwasenthralled. Thescout,towhomalone,ofallthewhitemen,thewordswereintelligible,sufferedhimselftobealittlearousedfromhismeditativeposture,andbenthisfaceaside,tocatchtheirmeaning,asthegirlsproceeded. ButwhentheyspokeofthefutureprospectsofCoraandUncas,heshookhishead,likeonewhoknewtheerroroftheirsimplecreed,andresuminghisrecliningattitude,hemaintainedituntiltheceremony,ifthatmightbecalledaceremony,inwhichfeelingwassodeeplyimbued,wasfinished. Happilyfortheself–commandofbothHeywardandMunro,theyknewnotthemeaningofthewildsoundstheyheard. Chingachgookwasasolitaryexceptiontotheinterestmanifestedbythenativepartoftheaudience. Hislookneverchangedthroughoutthewholeofthescene,nordidamusclemoveinhisrigidcountenance,evenatthewildestorthemostpatheticpartsofthelamentation. Thecoldandsenselessremainsofhissonwasalltohim,andeveryothersensebutthatofsightseemedfrozen,inorderthathiseyesmighttaketheirfinalgazeatthoselineamentshehadsolongloved,andwhichwerenowabouttobeclosedforeverfromhisview. Inthisstageoftheobsequies,awarriormuchrenownedfordeedinarms,andmoreespeciallyforservicesintherecentcombat,amanofsternandgravedemeanor,advancedslowlyfromthecrowd,andplacedhimselfnighthepersonofthedead. “Whyhastthouleftus,prideoftheWapanachki?” hesaid,addressinghimselftothedullearsofUncas,asiftheemptyclayretainedthefacultiesoftheanimatedman;“thytimehasbeenlikethatofthesunwheninthetrees;theyglorybrighterthanhislightatnoonday. Thouartgone,youthfulwarrior,butahundredWyandotsareclearingthebriersfromthypathtotheworldofthespirits. Whothatsawtheeinbattlewouldbelievethatthoucouldstdie? WhobeforetheehasevershownUttawathewayintothefight? Thyfeetwerelikethewingsofeagles;thinearmheavierthanfallingbranchesfromthepine;andthyvoiceliketheManitouwhenHespeaksintheclouds. ThetongueofUttawaisweak,”headded,lookingabouthimwithamelancholygaze,“andhisheartexceedingheavy. PrideoftheWapanachki,whyhastthouleftus?” Hewassucceededbyothers,indueorder,untilmostofthehighandgiftedmenofthenationhadsungorspokentheirtributeofpraiseoverthemanesofthedeceasedchief. Wheneachhadended,anotherdeepandbreathingsilencereignedinalltheplace. Thenalow,deepsoundwasheard,likethesuppressedaccompanimentofdistantmusic,risingjusthighenoughontheairtobeaudible,andyetsoindistinctly,astoleaveitscharacter,andtheplacewhenceitproceeded,alikemattersofconjecture. Itwas,however,succeededbyanotherandanotherstrain,eachinahigherkey,untiltheygrewontheear,firstinlongdrawnandoftenrepeatedinterjections,andfinallyinwords. ThelipsofChingachgookhadsofarparted,astoannouncethatitwasthemonodyofthefather. Thoughnotaneyewasturnedtowardhimnorthesmallestsignofimpatienceexhibited,itwasapparent,bythemannerinwhichthemultitudeelevatedtheirheadstolisten,thattheydrankinthesoundswithanintensenessofattention,thatnonebutTamenundhimselfhadeverbeforecommanded.Buttheylistenedinvain. Thestrainsrosejustsoloudastobecomeintelligible,andthengrewfainterandmoretrembling,untiltheyfinallysankontheear,asifborneawaybyapassingbreathofwind. ThelipsoftheSagamoreclosed,andheremainedsilentinhisseat,lookingwithhisrivetedeyeandmotionlessform,likesomecreaturethathadbeenturnedfromtheAlmightyhandwiththeformbutwithoutthespiritofaman. TheDelawareswhoknewbythesesymptomsthatthemindoftheirfriendwasnotpreparedforsomightyaneffortoffortitude,relaxedintheirattention;and,withaninnatedelicacy,seemedtobestowalltheirthoughtsontheobsequiesofthestrangermaiden. Asignalwasgiven,byoneoftheelderchiefs,tothewomenwhocrowdedthatpartofthecirclenearwhichthebodyofCoralay. Obedienttothesign,thegirlsraisedthebiertotheelevationoftheirheads,andadvancedwithslowandregulatedsteps,chanting,astheyproceeded,anotherwailingsonginpraiseofthedeceased. Gamut,whohadbeenacloseobserverofriteshedeemedsoheathenish,nowbenthisheadovertheshoulderoftheunconsciousfather,whispering: “Theymovewiththeremainsofthychild;shallwenotfollow,andseetheminterredwithChristianburial?” Munrostarted,asifthelasttrumpethadsoundedinhisear,andbestowingoneanxiousandhurriedglancearoundhim,hearoseandfollowedinthesimpletrain,withthemienofasoldier,butbearingthefullburdenofaparent’ssuffering. Hisfriendspressedaroundhimwithasorrowthatwastoostrongtobetermedsympathy—eventheyoungFrenchmanjoiningintheprocession,withtheairofamanwhowassensiblytouchedattheearlyandmelancholyfateofonesolovely. Butwhenthelastandhumblestfemaleofthetribehadjoinedinthewildandyetorderedarray,themenoftheLenapecontractedtheircircle,andformedagainaroundthepersonofUncas,assilent,asgrave,andasmotionlessasbefore. TheplacewhichhadbeenchosenforthegraveofCorawasalittleknoll,whereaclusterofyoungandhealthfulpineshadtakenroot,formingofthemselvesamelancholyandappropriateshadeoverthespot. Onreachingitthegirlsdepositedtheirburden,andcontinuedformanyminuteswaiting,withcharacteristicpatience,andnativetimidity,forsomeevidencethattheywhosefeelingsweremostconcernedwerecontentwiththearrangement. Atlengththescout,whoaloneunderstoodtheirhabits,said,intheirownlanguage: “Mydaughtershavedonewell;thewhitementhankthem.” Satisfiedwiththistestimonyintheirfavor,thegirlsproceededtodepositthebodyinashell,ingeniously,andnotinelegantly,fabricatedofthebarkofthebirch;afterwhichtheylowereditintoitsdarkandfinalabode. Theceremonyofcoveringtheremains,andconcealingthemarksofthefreshearth,byleavesandothernaturalandcustomaryobjects,wasconductedwiththesamesimpleandsilentforms. Butwhenthelaborsofthekindbeingswhohadperformedthesesadandfriendlyofficesweresofarcompleted,theyhesitated,inawaytoshowthattheyknewnothowmuchfurthertheymightproceed. Itwasinthisstageoftheritesthatthescoutagainaddressedthem: “Myyoungwomenhavedoneenough,”hesaid:“thespiritofthepalefacehasnoneedoffoodorraiment,theirgiftsbeingaccordingtotheheavenoftheircolor. Isee,”headded,glancinganeyeatDavid,whowaspreparinghisbookinamannerthatindicatedanintentiontoleadthewayinsacredsong,“thatonewhobetterknowstheChristianfashionsisabouttospeak.” Thefemalesstoodmodestlyaside,and,fromhavingbeentheprincipalactorsinthescene,theynowbecamethemeekandattentiveobserversofthatwhichfollowed. DuringthetimeDavidoccupiedinpouringoutthepiousfeelingsofhisspiritinthismanner,notasignofsurprise,noralookofimpatience,escapedthem. Theylistenedlikethosewhoknewthemeaningofthestrangewords,andappearedasiftheyfeltthemingledemotionsofsorrow,hope,andresignation,theywereintendedtoconvey. Excitedbythescenehehadjustwitnessed,andperhapsinfluencedbyhisownsecretemotions,themasterofsongexceededhisusualefforts. Hisfullrichvoicewasnotfoundtosufferbyacomparisonwiththesofttonesofthegirls;andhismoremodulatedstrainspossessed,atleastfortheearsofthosetowhomtheywerepeculiarlyaddressed,theadditionalpowerofintelligence. Heendedtheanthem,ashehadcommencedit,inthemidstofagraveandsolemnstillness. When,however,theclosingcadencehadfallenontheearsofhisauditors,thesecret,timorousglancesoftheeyes,andthegeneralandyetsubduedmovementoftheassemblage,betrayedthatsomethingwasexpectedfromthefatherofthedeceased. Munroseemedsensiblethatthetimewascomeforhimtoexertwhatis,perhaps,thegreatesteffortofwhichhumannatureiscapable. Hebaredhisgraylocks,andlookedaroundthetimidandquietthrongbywhichhewasencircled,withafirmandcollectedcountenance. Then,motioningwithhishandforthescouttolisten,hesaid: “Saytothesekindandgentlefemales,thataheart–brokenandfailingmanreturnsthemhisthanks. Tellthem,thattheBeingweallworship,underdifferentnames,willbemindfuloftheircharity;andthatthetimeshallnotbedistantwhenwemayassemblearoundHisthronewithoutdistinctionofsex,orrank,orcolor.” Thescoutlistenedtothetremulousvoiceinwhichtheveterandeliveredthesewords,andshookhisheadslowlywhentheywereended,asonewhodoubtedtheirefficacy. “Totellthemthis,”hesaid,“wouldbetotellthemthatthesnowscomenotinthewinter,orthatthesunshinesfiercestwhenthetreesarestrippedoftheirleaves.” Thenturningtothewomen,hemadesuchacommunicationoftheother’sgratitudeashedeemedmostsuitedtothecapacitiesofhislisteners. TheheadofMunrohadalreadysunkuponhischest,andhewasagainfastrelapsingintomelancholy,whentheyoungFrenchmanbeforenamedventuredtotouchhimlightlyontheelbow. Whilehiscompanionsweremounting,however,hefoundtimetopressthehandofthescout,andtorepeatthetermsofanengagementtheyhadmadetomeetagainwithinthepostsoftheBritisharmy. Then,gladlythrowinghimselfintothesaddle,hespurredhischargertothesideofthelitter,whencelawandstifledsobsaloneannouncedthepresenceofAlice. Inthismanner,theheadofMunroagaindroopingonhisbosom,withHeywardandDavidfollowinginsorrowingsilence,andattendedbytheaidofMontcalmwithhisguard,allthewhitemen,withtheexceptionofHawkeye,passedfrombeforetheeyesoftheDelawares,andwereburiedinthevastforestsofthatregion. Butthetiewhich,throughtheircommoncalamity,hadunitedthefeelingsofthesesimpledwellersinthewoodswiththestrangerswhohadthustransientlyvisitedthem,wasnotsoeasilybroken. Yearspassedawaybeforethetraditionarytaleofthewhitemaiden,andoftheyoungwarrioroftheMohicansceasedtobeguilethelongnightsandtediousmarches,ortoanimatetheiryouthfulandbravewithadesireforvengeance. Neitherwerethesecondaryactorsinthesemomentousincidentsforgotten.
