ItappearedfromtheunembellishedstatementofDavid,thathisownpresencehadbeenratherenduredthandesired;thoughevenMaguahadnotbeenentirelyexemptfromthatvenerationwithwhichtheIndiansregardthosewhomtheGreatSpirithadvisitedintheirintellects. Atnight,theutmostcarehadbeentakenofthecaptives,bothtopreventinjuryfromthedampsofthewoodsandtoguardagainstanescape. HeonlyknewthattheyhadnotengagedinthelateexpeditionagainstWilliamHenry;that,liketheHuronsthemselvestheywerealliesofMontcalm;andthattheymaintainedanamicable,thoughawatchfulintercoursewiththewarlikeandsavagepeoplewhomchancehad,foratime,broughtinsuchcloseanddisagreeablecontactwiththemselves. Everylinethatcouldpossiblybeinterpretedintoasecretinclinationforwar,wascarefullyavoided;while,ontheotherhand,hestudiedthoseconceitsthatmightbeconstruedintoamity. SuchexhibitionswerenotuncommonamongtheIndians,andasDuncanwasalreadysufficientlydisguisedinhisdress,therecertainlydidexistsomereasonforbelievingthat,withhisknowledgeofFrench,hemightpassforajugglerfromTiconderoga,stragglingamongthealliedandfriendlytribes. Whenhewasthoughttobesufficientlypainted,thescoutgavehimmuchfriendlyadvice;concertedsignals,andappointedtheplacewheretheyshouldmeet,intheeventofmutualsuccess. ThepartingbetweenMunroandhisyoungfriendwasmoremelancholy;still,theformersubmittedtotheseparationwithanindifferencethathiswarmandhonestnaturewouldneverhavepermittedinamorehealthfulstateofmind.
