Unablelongertofoilanenemysoalertandvigilant,hethrewhisarmsabouthim,andsucceededinpinningthelimbsoftheothertohisside,withanirongrasp,butonethatwasfartooexhaustingtohimselftocontinuelong. Buttheconflictwassoondecided;thetomahawkofHeywardandtherifleofHawkeyedescendedontheskulloftheHuron,atthesamemomentthattheknifeofUncasreachedhisheart. Thebattlewasnowentirelyterminatedwiththeexceptionoftheprotractedstrugglebetween“LeRenardSubtil”and“LeGrosSerpent.” Welldidthesebarbarouswarriorsprovethattheydeservedthosesignificantnameswhichhadbeenbestowedfordeedsinformerwars. Itistruetherewereshortandfleetingmoments,whenthefieryeyesofMaguawereseenglittering,likethefabledorgansofthebasiliskthroughthedustywreathbywhichhewasenveloped,andhereadbythoseshortanddeadlyglancesthefateofthecombatinthepresenceofhisenemies;ere,however,anyhostilehandcoulddescendonhisdevotedhead,itsplacewasfilledbythescowlingvisageofChingachgook.
