Sometimeshemightirretrievablyinjureaspecimenbyhistoogreatardourinhandlingit;butstillheunitedthegeniusofatruegeologistwiththekeeneyeofthemineralogist. Armedwithhishammer,hissteelpointer,hismagneticneedles,hisblowpipe,andhisbottleofnitricacid,hewasapowerfulmanofscience.
