HehopedthatwithintelligentassistanceIshouldmeetwithlittletodiscourageme,andshouldsoonbeabletodispensewithanyaidbuthis. Throughhiswayofsayingthis,andmuchmoretosimilarpurpose,heplacedhimselfonconfidentialtermswithmeinanadmirablemanner;andImaystateatoncethathewasalwayssozealousandhonourableinfulfillinghiscompactwithme,thathemademezealousandhonourableinfulfillingminewithhim. Ifhehadshownindifferenceasamaster,IhavenodoubtIshouldhavereturnedthecomplimentasapupil;hegavemenosuchexcuse,andeachofusdidtheotherjustice. Nor,didIeverregardhimashavinganythingludicrousabouthim—oranythingbutwhatwasserious,honest,andgood—inhistutorcommunicationwithme. Whenthesepointsweresettled,andsofarcarriedoutasthatIhadbeguntoworkinearnest,itoccurredtomethatifIcouldretainmybedroominBarnard’sInn,mylifewouldbeagreeablyvaried,whilemymannerswouldbenonetheworseforHerbert’ssociety.
