Everythinglookedbeautiful,inthefreshnessofearlyspring.Fromathicketclosebycamethreebeautifulwhiteswans,rustlingtheirfeathers,andswimminglightlyoverthesmoothwater.Theducklingrememberedthelovelybirds,andfeltmorestrangelyunhappythanever. Henowfeltgladathavingsufferedsorrowandtrouble,becauseitenabledhimtoenjoysomuchbetterallthepleasureandhappinessaroundhim;forthegreatswansswamroundthenew-comer,andstrokedhisneckwiththeirbeaks,asawelcome. Intothegardenpresentlycamesomelittlechildren,andthrewbreadandcakeintothewater. "See,"criedtheyoungest,"thereisanewone;"andtherestweredelighted,andrantotheirfatherandmother,dancingandclappingtheirhands,andshoutingjoyously,"Thereisanotherswancome;anewonehasarrived." Thentheythrewmorebreadandcakeintothewater,andsaid,"Thenewoneisthemostbeautifulofall;heissoyoungandpretty."Andtheoldswansbowedtheirheadsbeforehim. Hehadbeenpersecutedanddespisedforhisugliness,andnowheheardthemsayhewasthemostbeautifulofallthebirds.Eventheelder-treebentdownitsbowsintothewaterbeforehim,andthesunshonewarmandbright.
