WhileGuphwasclimbingahillitsankdownunderhimandbecameavalley,andwhilehewasdescendingintoavalleyitroseupandcarriedhimtothetopofahill. Thiswasveryperplexingtothetraveler,andastrangermighthavethoughthecouldnevercrosstheRippleLandatall. ButGuphknewthatifhekeptsteadilyonhewouldgettotheendatlast;sohepaidnoattentiontothechanginghillsandvalleysandploddedalongascalmlyasifwalkinguponthelevelground. TheresultofthiswisepersistencewasthattheGeneralfinallyreachedfirmersoiland,afterpenetratingadenseforest,cametotheDominionoftheGrowleywogs. NosoonerhadhecrossedtheborderofthisdomainwhentwoguardsseizedhimandcarriedhimbeforetheGrandGallipootoftheGrowleywogs,whoscowleduponhimferociouslyandaskedhimwhyhedaredintrudeuponhisterritory. “I’mtheLordHighGeneraloftheInvincibleArmyoftheNomes,andmynameisGuph,”wasthereply.“Alltheworldtrembleswhenthatnameismentioned.” TheGrowleywogsgaveashoutofjeeringlaughteratthis,andoneofthemcaughttheNomeinhisstrongarmsandtossedhimhighintotheair. Theirpowerfulmuscleslayjustunderneaththeirskins,likebunchesoftoughrope,andtheweakestGrowleywogwassostrongthathecouldpickupanelephantandtossitsevenmilesaway. Itseemsunfortunatethatstrongpeopleareusuallysodisagreeableandoverbearingthatnoonecaresforthem. Infact,tobedifferentfromyourfellowcreaturesisalwaysamisfortune. TheGrowleywogsknewthattheyweredislikedandavoidedbyeveryone,sotheyhadbecomesurlyandunsociableevenamongthemselves. ButwhilethiswasgoingontheGrandGallipootwastalkingwithhiscounselors,whowerethemostimportantofficialsoftheGrowleywogs.
