Andthemirroransweredasusual:
"Queen,Queen,onthythrone,
SnowWhite'sthefairestthoumustown."
AndtheQueenknewthatSnowWhitehadnotbeenslain.SoshesentforthehunterandmadehimconfessthathehadletSnowWhitego;andshemadehimsearchaboutbeyondtheforest,tillatlasthebroughtbackwordtoherthatSnowWhitewasdwellinginalittlehutonthehillwithsomecoal-miners.
ThentheQueendressedherselfuplikeanoldwoman,and,takingapoisonedcombwithher,wentbackthenextdaytothehutwhereSnowWhitewasliving.Nowthedwarfshadwarnedhernottoopenthedoortoanybodylestevilmightbefallher;andshefounditverylonesomekeepingalwayswithindoors.
WhentheQueen,disguisedasanoldwoman,cametothedoorofthehousesheknockeduponitwithherstick,butSnowWhitecalledoutfromwithin:
"Whoisthere?Goaway!Imustnotletanybodycomein."
"Allright,"answeredtheQueen."Ifyoucancometothewindowwecanhavealittlechatthere,andIcanshowyoumywares."
SowhenSnowWhitecametothewindowtheQueensaid:
"Oh,whatbeautifulblackhair;yououghttohaveacombtobinditup;"andsheshowedherthecombthatshehadbroughtwithher.
ButSnowWhitesaid:
"Ihavenomoneyandcannotaffordtobuysofineacomb."
ThentheQueensaid:
"Thatisnomatter;perhapsyouhavesomethinggoldenthatyoucangivemeinexchange."
AndSnowWhitethoughtofagoldenringthatherfatherhadgiventoher,andofferedtogiveitforthecomb.TheQueentookitandgaveSnowWhitethecombandbadehergood-bye,andwentbacktothepalace.
SnowWhitelostnotimeingoingtothemirror,andbindingupherhairandputtingthecombintoit.Butithadscarcelybeeninherhairafewminuteswhenshefelldownasifsheweredead,andallthebloodlefthercheeks,andshewasSnowWhiteindeed.
Whenthedwarfscamehomethateveningtheyweresurprisedtofindthatthetablewasnotspreadforthem,andlookingabouttheysoonfoundSnowWhitelyinguponthegroundasifsheweredead.Butoneofthemlistenedtoherheartandsaid:"Shelives!Shelives!"
AndtheybegantoconsiderwhatcausedSnowWhitetofallintosuchaswoon.Theysoonfoundthecomb,andwhentheytookitoutSnowWhitesoonopenedhereyesandbecameaslivelyassheeverwasbefore.
NextmorningtheQueenwenttothemirroronthewallandsaidtoit:
"Mirror,mirror,onthewall,
Whoisthefairestofusall?"
Thenthemirrorsaidasbefore:
"Queen,Queen,onthythrone,
SnowWhite'sthefairestthoumustown."
ThentheQueenknewthatsomethinghadhappenedtothecombandthatSnowWhitewasstillalive.Soshedressedherselfoncemoreasanoldwomanandtookwithherapoisonedribbonandwenttothehutofthethreedwarfs.Andwhenshegottheresheknockedatthedoor,butSnowWhitecalledout:
"Youcannotenter;Imustnotopenthedoor."
Then,asbefore,theQueencalledoutinreply:
"Thencometothewindow,andyoucanseemywares."
WhenSnowWhitecametothewindowtheQueensaid:
"Youarelookingmorebeautifulthanever,buthowunbecominglyyouarrangeyourhair.DidyouusethatcombIgaveyouyesterday?"
"Yes,indeed,"saidSnowWhite,"andIfellintoaswoonbecauseofit;Iamafraidthereissomethingthematterwithit."
"No,no,thatcannotbe,"saidtheQueen;"theremustbesomemistake.ButifyoucannotusethecombIwillletyouhavethisprettyribboninstead,"andsheheldoutthepoisonedribbon.SnowWhitetookit,andaftertheoldwoman,asshethoughtshewas,hadgoneaway,SnowWhitewenttothemirrorandtiedupherhairwiththepieceofribbon.Butscarcelyhadshedonesowhenshefelltothegroundlifelessandlaythereasifsheweredead.
ThateveningthedwarfscamehomeandfoundSnowWhitelyingonthegroundasifdead,butsoondiscoveredthepoisonedribbonanduntiedit;andalmostassoonasthiswasdoneSnowWhiterevivedagain.
NextmorningtheQueenwentoncemoretothemirroronthewall,andcalledout:
"Mirror,mirror,onthewall,
Whoisthefairestofusall?"
towhichthemirrorreplied,withoutanychange:
"Queen,Queen,onthythrone,
SnowWhite'sthefairestthoumustown."
AndtheQueenrecognizedthatonceagainherplanshadfailed,andSnowWhitewasstillalive.Soshedressedherselfoncemoreandtookwithherapoisonedapple,whichwassoarrangedthatonlyonehalfofitwaspoisonedandtherestofitwasleftasbefore.AndwhentheQueengottothehutofthedwarfsshetriedtoopenthedoor,butSnowWhitecalledout:
"Youcan'tcomein!"
"ThenI'llcometothewindow,"saidtheQueen.
"Ah,youaretheoldladythatcametwicebefore;youhavenotbroughtmegoodluck,eachtimesomethinghasbefallenme."
ButtheQueensaid:
"Idonotknowhowthatcanbe;Ionlybroughtyousomethingforyourhair;perhapsyoutiedittootight.ToshowyouthatIhavenoill-willagainstyouIhavebroughtyouthisbeautifulapple."
"Butmyguardians,"saidSnowWhite,"toldmethatImusttakenothingmorefromyou."
"Oh,thisisnothingtowear,"saidtheQueen,"thisissomethingtoeat.ToshowyouthattherecanbenoharminitIwilltakehalfofitmyselfandyoushalleattheotherhalf."
SoshecuttheappleintwoandgavethepoisonedhalftoSnowWhite.Andthemomentshehadswallowedthefirstbiteofitshefelldowndead.ThentheQueenslunkawayandwentbacktothepalaceandwentatoncetoherchamberandaddressedthemirroronthewall:
"Mirror,mirror,onthewall,
Whoisthefairestofusall?"
Andthistimethemirroranswered,asitusedtodo:
"Queen,Queen,onthythrone,
Thegreatestbeautyisthineown."
ThentheQueenknewthatSnowWhitewasdeadatlast,andthatshewaswithoutarivalinbeauty.
