Assoonasthespringcameandthewarmthofthesunpenetratedtheground,
theswallowsaidgoodbyetoThumbelisa,whoopenedtheholewhichthemolehadmadeabove.
Thesunstreamedindeliciouslyuponthem,andtheswallowaskedifshewouldnotgowithhim;
shecouldsituponhisbackandtheywouldflyfarawayintothegreenwood.
ButThumbelisaknewthatitwouldgrievetheoldfield-mouse,ifsheleftherlikethat.
"No,Ican't,"saidThumbelisa.
"Goodbye,goodbye,then,youkindprettygirl,"saidtheswallow,andflewoutintothesunshine.
Thumbelisalookedafterhimandhereyesfilledwithtears,forshewasveryfondofthepoorswallow.
"Tweet,tweet,"sangthebird,andflewintothegreenwood.
Thumbelisawasverysad.
Shewasnotallowedtogointothewarmsunshineatall;
thecornwhichwassowninthefieldnearthefield-mouse'shousegrewquitelong;
itwasathickforestforthepoorlittlegirlwhowasonlyaninchhigh.
